Lions Register For Massive Vernal Convention

The Vernal Lions report 1250 delegates registered for the State Convention May 31 to June 2, with peak registrations once at 1450 before cancellations. Alvin E Weeks chairs the event with Vera C Hocking as convention chair. Highlights include a gold all day golf, preconvention mixer, and Friday sessions at Utah High School auditorium.

Stores to Close Here Wednesday Observes Memorial Day

Vernal stores and businesses will close on Wednesday May 30 for Memorial Day. Neighborhood groceries and service stations that normally open Sunday will operate on the Sunday schedule, while drug stores will follow their usual Sunday hours from 1 to 6 pm.

Four youths rode a rubber craft that snagged on a rock. The others reached shore safely though one boy was not wearing a life jacket. He was swept downstream in swift current near Mantle Ranch about five miles from the Yampa Green confluence and is missing.

At Flaming Gorge Lodge the Colorado River Development Association of 21 counties reelected H. Stringham as president and L Siddeway as secretary. Both are Vernal residents. The group backed the Upper Colorado Storage Project and toured the Flaming Gorge Dam area.

Bennett Urges Funds for Four Vernal Area Projects

Senator Wallace F Bennett urged the Senate Appropriation Committee to fund four Vernal area projects. He sought 2100,000 for the Vernal Unit drainage work, 13,623,000 for Flaming Gorge dam and powerplant concrete, 235,000 for Wyoming and 13,382,000 for Utah, plus related engineering studies and project extensions.

Vernal Chamber Probes Water Supply for Stelnaker Area

The Vernal Chamber of Commerce discussed a potential culinary water source for the Stelnaker recreation area at a Tuesday meeting. National Pack Service officials showed interest in piping water from the Neal Dome well in Dry Fork to the Stellnoker area. The chamber expects a permanent road to the reservoir to be built by fall. An invitation from Father John Doyle of St James Catholic Church was announced.

May employment stands at a record level for the season, with about 8 percent more jobs than May 1901. Construction drives gains while unemployment remains low, yet serious labor shortages are expected through summer in skilled trades.

Duchesne School District officials suffered a heavy defeat Tuesday as a leeway proposal to raise the mill levy for operating funds failed 1003 to 426. If approved property owners would have paid about nine gains extra. Uintah District had considered a vote but halted it May 3 due to unresolved questions.

Vernal Wins Utah Jaycee 1963 State Convention

Vernal was the winning bidder to host the 1963 Utah Junior Chamber of Commerce convention. The announcement came during the 1962 Logan convention last weekend. Attendees from Vernal included Mr and Mrs Doug Mc Lean Mr and Mrs Kary Stringham Mr and Mrs Maughan Colton Mr and Mrs Ken Calder Mr and Mrs Harden Nelson Mr and Mrs Paul McGlasson and Mr and Mrs Tom Stocks Len Cashmere of Ogden was installed as the new state president.

Recreation Bids For Steinaker Open Tuesday

Bids for roads walks and picnic facilities at Steinaker Dam and Reservoir will be opened at the National Park Service regional office in Santa Fe Tuesday. Plans may be obtained from the Region Three Office Santa Fe New Mexico. The dam and reservoir are part of a Bureau of Reclamation project and recreation construction is by the National Park Service with administration by the Utah State Park and Recreation Commission.

County savings bonds rise in April purchases

Vintah County residents bought 3101 in savings bonds in April, county bonds chairman N. J. Meagher Jr. reported. January through April total purchases reached 19,800, he disclosed.

Uintah Girls Take Sixth At Utah Track Meet

Uintah High School finished sixth in the Class B field meet at Ute University of Utah stadium. Jim Vernon won the mile in 4:95.4 for the gold, Cary Belcher placed second in the javelin and third in the 44 yard dash, Uintah also third in the medley relay. Cedar City led with 49 points, Uintah totaled 10.

Phosphate Output to Triple at VernaI Plant Expansion

E W M Naughton of Utah Power and Light announced at Salt Lake City the Ver nal phosphate operation will triple output via two additional concentrator units within 18 months. Officials cited expandable plant capacity but expansion timing remains under negotiation amid uncertain duration.
