Vernal Clean City praised after fire inspection results

Vernal is lauded as one of the cleanest cities after a fire inspection day. Uintah Stake Conference set for May 17-18 with LDS Church leaders presiding. Over 192 buildings inspected, 412 red tags issued for fire hazards. Fire prevention demonstrations, a city luncheon, and a poster contest for students featured.

Utah Fishermen Urged to Buy Licenses Early

With one short month before the 1950 season opener on June 7 Utah anglers are urged to buy 1958 fishing licenses early. About 500 license agents are available nationwide and no waiting is needed at present. Agents display signs and are well stocked, and officials advise early purchase to avoid last minute rush or possible shortages.

Ashley Valley Sports Shop Sets Grand Opening

Ashley Valley Sports Shop announces a grand opening to be held Friday and Saturday. Owners Mr and Mrs Bob Williams say the enlarged store features a bigger area for the hobby shop run by Dean Reynolds, a large selection of guns and outdoor gear, and a gun and radio service department by Duane Anderson and Conley Aldridge. The store also offers a complete line of 1950 appliances including refrigerators freezers washers dryers ranges and more.

Rod and Gun Club Fly Casting Contest Set for May 12

The Rod and Gun Club announces a fly and spin casting contest Monday May 12 at 6 30 pm on the courthouse grounds beside the tennis court. It is directed by the club’s first committee with Tex Sweatfield and Larson Caldwell as chairmen. Prizes will include various fishing tackle. The event is open to the public. a regular monthly meeting and a fishing film by Wright and McGill will follow.

Four Fires Break Out In One Day Property Loss Near $2000

Vernal volunteer fire department had a busy day Monday with four outbreaks and total damage near $2000. Fires included a weed burn spreading to sheds at the Louis Rekerta property, a hive fire at LaVeli Manwaring’s bee yard, a chicken coop blaze on Vernal Avenue, and a butane tank incident near 93 Best 3rd. A fire the next day north of the Armed Forces Day proclamation closed the page.

Grand openings planned for Green Valley Market

Green Valley Market at 532 West Main completed enlarging and renovations. No grand opening is planned for Friday and Saturday despite announcements. The store adds a bakery department larger refrigerated case meat and produce sections streamlined aisles and checkout counters. Valuable prizes promised during the opening event.

Din Dinosaur Quarry Visitor Center Dedication Slated Sunday

A new visitor center for Dinosaur National Monument in Utah will be dedicated with ceremonies on Sunday June 1. The event, hosted by the Interior Department and the National Park Service with Vernal Chamber of Commerce, focuses on the Utah portion of the monument and excludes debates on Echo Park Split Mountain dams or national park status.

Vernal Chamber names new executive slate for year

The Vernal Chamber of Commerce named a new executive committee on Tuesday with Dr T R Seager as treasurer replacing Alvin Kay. Dwight Wetenkamp is president Harold Duke vice president Ken Sowards past president and Glenn Cooper. Paul M Armstrong reported Little League growth from 60 to 140 applicants this year.

Vernal Hosts State Open Horseshoe Tournament

The State Vernal Open horseshoe tournament will be held at the city park behind the fieldhouse on Saturday June 7. Defending champion Clive Wahllu of Salt Lake City will try to retain his crown after finishing fifth in last year’s national tournament at Murray Park.

Vernal Unit Repayment Contract Approved by Uintah District

Uintah Water Conservancy District approved a draft repayment contract for the Vernal unit of the Central Utah Project. The agreement covers 1600 acre feet of municipal water, with meetings ongoing to 11 pm. Officials expect Washington review by Monday and Interior Secretary approval ahead of state legislative action.

Local Bowmen Plan Ranges North of Vernal

The Sted Cloud Bowmen with Udell Gardiner state game warden laid out the rouge survey Areny north of Vernal for conservation. After surveying, a picnic followed, then a roving archery party practiced under hunting conditions. A rabbit shoot occurred, balloons served as targets with numbers for prizes. Jess Nacking won a buckskin quiver and Lannie Taylor received a fetching tool, donated by Dean Reynolds.

Ashley Stake Relief Society Hosts IAS Convention in Glines Chapel

Ashley Stake Relief Society held a convention and party at Glines Ward Chapel with special honors for Sarah A Smith and Susanna Wardle for long visiting teaching service. Lucille Swell, daughter of Mrs Smith, summarized her mother's work in Wyoming and Utah. Attendees recalled travel methods from horseback to wagons, with a plant gift to each honoree.
