Verbal Rodeo Dates Set and Music Festival Draws Crowds

The Vernal Rodeo Association named July 15 16 17 as the rodeo days with new stock contracts and acts. A night show may be added for the first time with lighting plans under consideration. The Region Five Music Festival drew about four thousand spectators and over 1 500 young musicians from multiple schools.

Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show and Sale Opens This Week

The Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show and Sale kicks off Thursday at the fairgrounds with over 220 entries expected across three days May 6 through 8. Donated livestock scales from the Vernal Lions Club worth more than 1500 aid judges and sale officials as Laurence Ross of Steamboat Springs and Mardin Broadbent of Utah Agricultural College prepare beef, sheep, and swine classes under the Danish judging system for about 1600 in prize money. The new 6000 building hosts the event though the roof won’t be finished, creating an open air show. The schedule includes horse, sheep, hog, dairy, and beef judging, a calf catch, pig greasing, and a horse pulling contest, with election of officers Friday noon.

Robert Marimon Named Wasatch Academy Student Council Member

Among candidates elected to the student council at Wasatch Academy recently was Robert Marimon. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Robert Marimon of White Rocks Uintah County. Robert will serve during the 1948 49 school year as a member of the senior class.

County Council to Reorganize in Vernal May 1

The Vijitah and Duchesne County Council of the USDA will meet at the county agent office in Vernal on May 1 to discuss reorganizing plans for the coming year. The meeting opens at two oclock in the afternoon.

Sheriff Snyder Returns Home After Hospital Stay

Uintah county sheriff Herbert M. Snyder, recently injured in an automobile accident, was released from the Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City and returned to his Vernal home Tuesday evening. He is recovering well from the fractures and injuries sustained in the crash.

US Forest Service fire control staff from Ogden Utah and Utah Fire Marshal John Burt toured the Vernal Forestry Supervisor's office to review summer fire control plans. A May 11 fire prevention meeting for agencies and groups is set at 2 pm. Ernest C. Hirsch joins as junior range examiner after relocating from Florida with his family.

Last Rites For Ausborn McCarrell

Funeral services were held this afternoon for Ausborn McCarrell age 50 who died Saturday in Fitzsimmons hospital Denver after a lingering illness. Bishop Phil Watkins presided in the second ward chapel at 2 p.m. McCarrell was born April 30 1889 in Vernal son of Joseph and Elizabeth Sulser McCarrell and spent his life in Uintah basin and Colorado. He was a World War I veteran in the field artillery overseas and never married. He is survived by brothers and sisters France McCarrell Craig Colo William Theodore and Wallace McCarrell of Vernal Mrs Kate Veater Burns Ore Mrs Lem Holmes and Mrs R M Tiffany of Vernal. Burial will be in Vernal Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.

Garden Club to Hear Famed Plant Expert

Vernal Garden Club president Mrs. Donald Barr announces a Friday night meeting at Central School in the Library room at 7 30. Iris Gardens culturist M D Wallace will lecture on weed and pest control and present a color slide projection on bulb type plants. Vernal Woman Celebrates 94th Birthday Milestone

Hephzibah Gardiner Hodgkinson, born May 7 1854 in Chalford Hill England, marks her 94th birthday in Vernal Utah. A longtime LDS Church worker and genealogical researcher, she raised 13 children after her husband William Hodgkinson died in 1908 and has donated to five temples and seven chapels.

Ceremonies Mark Chapel Spade Work

Ceremonies mark the start of construction on the $300,000 Third Ward Chapel scheduled for Thursday noon on the Tabernacle grounds. The event includes the Vernal Third Ward choir song, dedicatory remarks by Bishop Orion R. Jones, and a prayer by Patriarch Fred Gingham, with an invitation to the public, civic groups, the mayor, city council, and county commissioners.

Henderson Retires As Justice of Peace Here

Judge W S Henderson resigns as Uintah County justice of the peace on May 1 after 43 years in public service. He cites physicians advice age and desire to ease up. The Vernal resident grew from a fishing trip to Colo rado to buy a local mercantile shop and stay. He plans to remain in Vernal with wife and visit Utah State Agricultural College for daughter Florence White’s graduation.

Uintah School Lunch Praised as Mrs Colton Named Director

Mrs Hugh W Colton was named director for region 6 by the Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers at the state convention held at the University of Utah. She plans organized PTA work in Uintah and Duchesne counties to build sound by law structures. Officials lauded Uintah’s school lunch program directed by Mrs Harvey Christensen, praising the Uintah County effort and ongoing work.

Carter Well Reaches 5789 Feet in Vernal Drilling

Drilling on the Carter Oil company well on the Ruth Nelson property seven miles west of Vernal has reached 5789 feet with minor showings and an 8500 foot target in view said Cate Evans, tool pusher. In Rangely, Utah Southern Oil expects 122 producing wells in the field within three months, with no dry holes yet and some holes producing enough flow to be economical. Standard Oil plans shale core tests at four locations, pay dirt likely at 6500 feet, while rumors of wildcatters reaching Bonanza and Roosevelt persist though no equipment moved in yet. Mrs Victor Karren and Dick Karren spent weekend on Blue Mountain ranch. Wiley Baucum returned from a fishing trip to Lander, Wyoming, with his wife after an extended stay in Mexico.
