Poet Mother of Tridel Dies of Heart Attack

Mrs Alice Morrill, longtime Tridell schoolteacher and poet, died Friday after an angina pectoris attack. She leaves several children and grandchildren and was honored at a Sunday funeral in the Tridel chapel with music and speakers from Vernal, Provo, and Tridell.

Quarterly Conference Held May 18 19 at Merkley Meadow

The quarterly conference is set for Saturday and Sunday May 18 and 19. The first session will be Saturday evening at Merkley Meadow in Dry Fork canon after an afternoon of sports from the Uin tah Stake Agstonic Triesthood.

Three Uintah Boys Place At BYU Invitational Track Meet

Coach Carl Davis of Uintah High School lauds three track athletes for earning recognitions at the BYU Invitational in Provo. Sterling Cook won the 830 yard run in 2 minutes 6 seconds and took second in the mile. Jack N Cook finished seventh in the mile. Dee Curfew placed third in the half mile in Class A while missing Class B action due to late arrival.

Moon Lake Ground Breaking Fete Planned for May 21

The Duchesne county Moon Lake celebration committee sets May 21 for a ground breaking ceremony at the dam site. Plans include forenoon ceremony, barbecue, sports, and evening dancing with a seven member committee chosen from each county section and notable figures invited. Construction has begun with dam-site staking and NRA carpenters preparing camp facilities as weather improves.

Ashley Ward Dinner Show and Dance Friday May 10

Ashley Ward will host a dinner matinee at the Vogue and a dance in the amusement hall on Friday May 10 to furnish their new ward chapel built at about 9000 dollars. Bishop Alms Reece notes the chapel was completed last winter and will be dedicated May 18 during Uintah Stake conference. The ward has used the Ashley school building and now invites the public to attend the events.

Weston Oaks to Address Uintah High Commencement

Dr. Weston Oaks of Provo will deliver the commencement address for Uintah High School. Seventy four seniors are to graduate at a program Monday evening May 6 at the Uintah high school auditorium.

Appropriation to Double Whiterocks Fish Hatchery Output

The Whiterocks fish hatchery along Farm Creek will double its output from 1.5 million to a higher level. Seventeen workers will be employed and a new water line, six ponds, retaining walls, check dams, and a cement floor will be added. Superintendent Jay Larsen will oversee the project funded by state and FER appropriations.

Uintah high school principal L G Noble was elected president of the Vernal Lions club at a Wednesday night meeting at the Community House. He has served as vice president this past year along with officers J O Stewart and B P Kelly as vice presidents, Hugh W Colton as secretary and treasurer, and directors H Sow erds J C Anderson. James Abplanaup Wins Intermountain Goods Letter Contest

James Abplanaup of Vernal won the Intermountain Made Goods weekly letter contest conducted across Intermountain states by the associated manufacturers. His winning letter appeared in 96 newspapers regionwide and was read by about 150000 people.

Roads in Uintah County Need Attention

Officials from Serial Express report the Willow Creek and Hill Creek roads are dangerously poor. From Ouray to Willow Creek school 23 miles took 1.5 hours with many hazards, including mud, cliffs, and hidden drops over Wallow Creek. Ranchers urge a road levy and Elton projects to grade existing roads and extend state funding.

Tah Congregational Conference to Meet in Provo

The 0th annual Tah Congregational conference will be held in Provo at the Community Church from May 9 to 11. Guest speakers include Mrs Mary D White of the Women's Board and Rev Theodore G Lilly of Salt Lake City. Rev Geo E Guild of Vernal will preach the conference sermon with delegates from Vernal Congregational Church in attendance.

Contraction Will Start Work Before High Water to Aid Fowl Nesting

Early in April engineer R. M. Crocker surveyed Stewart Lakes with W. O Crump to assess feasibility of migratory fowl nesting and hunting grounds. The report to Newell Brook led Vernal to approve, with state FE RE committee expected to endorse, aiding national conservation efforts. Work would begin promptly to precede high water from Green river overflow.

Vernal Express Scholarship Campaign Nears Second Period End

Saturday May 4 marks the close of the campaign's second period with a drop in voting power for all subscriptions. Candidates are urged to submit all new or renewal subs to the campaign office by 8 pm and out-of-town entries by noon Monday to receive second period votes. Ashley Valley residents are invited to the Gold and Green May Day Carnival at Lapoint Friday evening.
