A Utah paper describes a premier petroglyph group near Vernal, featuring a Great Warrior with Shield. Ashley Reservoir company of Vernal filed on March 23 with the state engineer to appropriate 3000 acre feet of water from British Creek. A dam across Brush Creek would store the water, release it to Brush Creek, then divert via Ashley Creek to irrigate 20000 acres in Ashley Valley using multiple ditches and canals.
The district court convened Monday with Judge Abe W. Turner presiding. The next term will be held May 3 at 2 p.m. Law and motion and probate matters will be disposed of then. The only jury case on Tuesday docket was Commercial Security Bank v Owens Livestock Co. Jurors were dismissed. case continued. Increment granted in the estate of James Miner Mantle. Minnie W Chapman v George W Baese et al. State of Utah v J P May et ux motion filed. Defendants given 20 days to answer. State of Utah v Joseph Rich et al, Argyle Roper, Carl Roberts, Nellie E McKee v Pard on Dodds et ux, James Pappas. Uintah Farm Bureau Cooperative Assoc. Thirty days to file. Defendants Charles and Lloyd Taylor and A M Mypsrup plaintiff. Letters of administration granted in the estates of George M Alexander and Henry L Creen.
The J C Penney company in Vernal promotes its 33rd anniversary with a four page ad signaling better conditions in Vernal. Manager Ray Duke says April values will attract shoppers, with offers running through most of April starting March 29.
The American Legion and Auxiliary in Vernal plan a double dance on Friday night April 6 across ten halls to cap a drive for a communal Hut. Tickets allow entry at either hall or dance between venues as guests switch locations. An Imperial gathering will feature a program and an auction of WWI relics. Continuous dancing follows. Nevan Band and Winns Six Aces provide music.
Regular Sunday School meets at 1000 oclock followed by a 1100 oclock preaching service with Rev George E Guild. Rey Gully will hold services at Fort Duchesne in the afternoon next Sunday and at Myton in the evening.
Ashley Sheep Grazers association met in the Uintah State Bank directors room to discuss marketing the 1935 wool clip and lamb crop. Harold E Davis presided as vice president. speakers included L B Mann James A Hooper and Irvin Jacobs. Hooper urged careful timing avoiding May and June as prices slump, noted past marketing costs, and compared advertising to pineapple consumption while urging more publicity to boost lamb and wool use. He projected a ten million pound carryover risk but optimism for 1938. A petition to reduce forest fees circulated among stockgrowers.
A large crowd attended a Wednesday dance in Lapoint to raise funds for furnishing the Lapoint chapel. Music by the Massey String Orchestra, arrangements by Samuel If Kimball, overseen by Bishop Jerry Harrison. The event was described as successful socially and financially, with more than 68 dollars realized by the ward.
A High School Band appeals for local support to fund instruments and travel for the Price contest. Band Mothers Club notes past high classifications and stresses music’s educational value while urging community backing to keep the band alive and balanced.
The Future Farmers of Utah High School unit sponsors a large boxing card on Monday April 1 at 6 p.m. It features nine four round bouts ending the school year. Local boxers include Tom Anderson Naples versus Dinosaur Pug and others from Vernal Maeser Ashley and nearby towns. The crowd is expected to pack the house as good clean sport opens the season finale.
The Vernal Lions Club announced a all Lions follies at the Community House with a program at the luncheon. Acts included Elaine Goodrich and Dean Hatch readings, Barbara Tiffany and Edlen Elizabeth Witbeck dance numbers, Lilian Young and Gwenn Eaton dances, and Lenore Lewis on piano.
At about pm Wednesday the fire alarm sounded when Mrs Ralph Siddoway phoned that the home of Mr and Mrs Raymond Bicdoway was on fire. The two story building formerly occupied by E. J Young Jr. The upper portion burned through between the roof and upper rooms. Injuries were minor to Tex Muffin and Ray Evans while aiding firemen. Ralph Siddoway, Tralph Siddoway, and Mrs Siddoway sustained various injuries. stitches were needed for a severed leg cut.
After a several day delay caused by a broken drive shaft a new asphalt plant seven miles west of Vernal started work today. About seventy men are employed in three eight hour shifts as the plant runs at capacity to supply nearly seven thousand tons for UG 49 between the Colorado Utah line and Myton a 70 mile stretch. The project will extend from the Twiste region west of Vernal and is expected to be finished by early May. Native rock asphalt surfacing will be used on Basin highways requiring over fifty thousand tons and is praised for low maintenance and labor intensive construction with cost advantages over other hard surfaces. The state road commission has tested the material and installed a modern plant at the town’s edge to process rich or lean asphalt into a finished product with specific oil and sand content.
State Senator Calder Andren Hamilton and Mrs Hamilton prepare a three month trip to central and southern Europe and the British Isles. They will fly from Salt Lake City on Friday with their son J Hamilton Calder and depart on April 10 for Europe, joined by family in Paria. The senator, who heads Uintah Giake, has a history as a missionary in Scotland and has four sons in the Swiss German mission. Howard, the youngest, is currently serving in Switzerland and will join later.
At the Marent Teacher Association meeting at United High School last week new officers were elected for 1935 30 Henry B Millecam was elected president Don L McConke was vice president Ralph Siddowsy was retained as secretary treasurer The retiring officers were Mrs Leo Thorne president and LeRoy Richens vice president
