Haunted Ghosts and Pack Train Legends of Ashley Valley
Early settler recounts crossing from Illinois and Ohio to Ashley Valley in Vernal with a pack train led by John Fairchilds. Families endured deep snow, hunger, and dangerous travels via rough terrain to Rangely and Meeker before settling on a haunted 100 acre ranch near Vernal, later sharing refuge with outlaws and neighbors while rebuilding a life and farms amid frontier peril.

Lone Winter on the Vernal Ranch
I was about fourteen when my mother sent the girls to school and my brothers worked away. Snow two feet deep, temperatures 30 to 40 below zero, I fed stock milked cows cut wood and kept the ranch alone for two months. I listened to coyotes and mountain lions from the old log house by the fire. We managed well on the haunted ranch and eventually bought it from our grandfather John Fairchilds.
