Men in the Armed Forces Honor Local Residents in Wartime Service

Lt Col Hugh W Colton visited here with family then returned to Tacoma Washington. Several local servicemen are promoted or stationed abroad including Massey promoted to Specialist Fourth Class, Stringham to Corporal, and Alvin Timothy in Africa. Readers note letters from Africa describe homesickness and new friendships while others report naval training and transfers to the Air Corps.

Legion meeting speaker recalls Guadalcanal experiences

Sgt. Dale Barger spoke at the American Legion about three months on Guadalcanal during World War II. He described watching the September 12, 1942 Japanese bombing raid and the anti aircraft response, plus natives helping unload supply ships in exchange for knives. He noted the Marine air group set up the first radio shop on the island. Continued on Page Four.

Car Demolished Sunday on US 40 Near Jensen

Sunday evening at 8 30 a 1939 Pontiac Sedan owned and driven by Charles Wm Hall Je was completely demolished in a wreck on US 40 near Jensen. The car traveled 264 feet before stopping after overturning a 15 foot embankment in a fence line. Driver Mr Hall sustained injuries and Elmo Reynolds received a minor arm injury. The car was on the left side of the road traveling west when the patrolman reported.

Declamation finals held at First Ward Chapel judging panel selects winners

Sunday evening at the First Ward Chapel seminary declamation finals were judged by Mrs Hugh W Colton H E Rul Inger and A Grant West. Mathel Merkley and Bob Lundell won with talks The Light That Shines in Darkness and Religion in The World Today. Contestants included Teddy Thacker Barta Caldwell Enid Caldwell and Cleo Bascom. Lt Col Hugh W Colton and Clayton Woolley gave brief addresses. Archie Johnson Bryan Goodrich of the Stake Presidency commented on outstanding declamation talks and the First Ward chair rendered selections.

OPA Eases Canned Food Ration for Isolated Workers

Representative Barrett says the Office of Price Administration will raise the monthly 48 point ration for workers without easy access to fresh fruit and vegetables, allowing more canned pork and beans and other processed foods. The change, to be announced soon, aims to help rural and can-dependent households.

Schools Start Earlier to Aid Farming

At the board meeting Mrs Ruth Haslem presiding, school hours were reorganized to ease farm labor shortages. Beginning Monday, Uintah High and Alterra schools will start earlier, with dismissals adjusted to 1:30 pm for some and longer days for others. All elementary schools will shift to meet the program, and Saturday school will be the last day this year to reach 174 instructional days.

Services Held at Lapoint for Pioneer Rancher

Impressive funeral services were conducted by Bishop Harvey Hullinger at the Lapoint ward chapel Saturday at 8 o clock pm for Cyrus Aton Pioneer. A prayer at the home was offered by Hayden Foster. Music included Nearer My God To Thee and Whispering Hope played by Orson Reynolds. Invocation by Jerry Harrison. A duet by Rex Taylor and his wife sang The Old Rugged Cross. Principal Luke Clegg of Alttera High School spoke, followed by a Taylor duet That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine. Dorothy and Craig Caldwell sang West Virginia Hills. Craig Van Massey gave the closing address. Perfect Day closed with Gerald Caldwell on piano. Bishop Hullinger expressed family appreciation. Benediction by J C Hacking.

Rancher Stevers Murray Dies After Stroke

Stevers Murray a 65 year old rancher, died at his brother John Murray’s home from a stroke. Originally from Jensen, he had farmed near Jensen and Rock for years. Survived by brothers John Murray of Vorml and Jed Murray of Whiteworks. Services planned at Naples chapel with burial in Jensen Cemetery.

Ashley Canyon area set for community park project

A planned recreation park in Ashley Canyon near Dry Fork Canyon was proposed last night. The project envisions facilities for picnics outings and reunions, with a road improvement and two bridges and the park slated to be ready for early spring use.

Uintah State Bank Offers Prizes for War Gardens

The Uintah State Bank launches a nationwide drive to boost agricultural output for national defense. Uintah County farmers can win cash prizes for top war crops with 2600, 1800, and 1000 dollars for the best three acres of dry edible beans and 3500, 2000, 1500, and 1000 dollars for the top four acres of corn ensilage, plus similar prizes for five acres of barley and ten acres of wheat.

Former Youth Loses Life in Gulf Storm

Clay Hatch son of Mr and Mrs Hatch former Vernal residents now of Los Angeles California served among fourteen soldiers testing their mettle Friday night in a gulf storm during an army maneuver. The barge and crew were struck by a sand bar near Catta. Continued on Page Five.

Purple Heart Award for Mrs Nicholson Revealed

Mrs Margaret Stewart Nicholson of Jensen receives by mail the Purple Heart posthumously awarded to her late husband, Sgt Bruce Nicholson of the U 8B Air Corps, killed in October 1943 in West Virginia. The decoration, tied to General Washington, was revived by the War Department in February 1992.
