Jury Fails to Agree in Phil Van Case

After 1044 hours of deliberation the jury could not agree in the Phil Van case. The panel was discharged by Judge Turner at 1 30 am after being sworn the previous Friday afternoon. Several jurors named include Abner Swain Henry Herriot Milton Hacking Ida May Nickol and others. The court adjourned to Duchesne for unfinished matters and a divorce action for Neva B McNeill and Dan P McNeil was settled out of court.

Roosevelt Junior College bill cleared by Senate and House

Last week legislators focused on pending measures. Senator Billings opposed SB 2 on natural gas tax and supported SB 190 to modify direct primary law. A bill to authorize a Roosevelt purifier college passed both chambers without appropriation. SB 292 proposed rerouting Highway 134 in Duchesne County. Representatives Larsen and Curry supported the Aquor local option bill and opposed a higher mine tax. both were largely absent or voting on several measures.

Highway 40 Club Leaders Attend Steamboat Springs Meet

Karren, president of the Utah Highway 40 club, and W S Henderson, secretary treasurer, attended the Colorado Highway 40 club annual meeting in Steamboat Springs as honored guests. They spoke at a business meeting and banquet while representatives from Denver and western cities praised the new highway and expected heavy spring and summer travel. Colorado towns along the route are raising funds for advertising, and the Utah club plans a similar meeting soon.

Willam Ellsworth Pioneer Dies at 78 in Leota From Ouray area obituary

Willam Fine Ellsworth 78 a pioneer of the Ouray Valley Leota community died Friday after a lingering illness. Services were held Sunday at the Teplat 20 Swant chapel with Bishop I S Fksin presiding. Interment followed at Leota cemetery. Ellsworth born in Franklin Idaho married Matilda Ann Goslind and moved to Leota in 1912 where he engaged in community affairs and canal projects. Surviving are his widow and eleven children including Luther Swett Ray Lester John Ellsworth Mrs Leslie Barney Dock Burnt Fork Wye Birs John Jackson Mrs Ray Barney and Princis Ellsworth of Leota.

Uintah Basins Cagers Reach State Tourney After Round Robin

Uintah High basketball teams dominated a Round Robin tournament at the local gym, with Roosevelt taking second and earning a state meet bid from Region Five. Kenneth Sowards led scoring with 35 points across 25 games, while LeGrande Hadlock Nery and others posted strong totals. Coaches, referees, and staff praised sportsmanship and crowd management through the event.

Calder Brothers win prize at Utah cheese exhibit

Calder Brothers cheese plant at Altonah won a silver medal at a Utah dairy exhibit held at Logan. Western Creamery of Salt Lake City and Southern Utah Dairy of Parowan received bronze. The event, sponsored by Utah State Agricultural College, highlights local production with Calder employing 43 workers and distributing dairy products to the Los Angeles market and beyond.

Ducks Fed in Ashley Valley by State Game Department

The State fish and game department under Deputy Game Warden Flord Noel feeds migratory ducks in Ashley Valley. Over 1500 ducks have been kept alive with feed for two months. about two tons of feed distributed in several feeding areas. Large numbers of pheasants also fed during severe winter weather. ducks are fed every other day along water canals.

Basin Pioneer Family Celebrates Five Generations

Five generations of William Gnymoh Caldwell met for the first time Saturday at the home of Mrs J H Koch in Salt Lake City. Mr Caldwell aged 84 and his wife 83 anticipate their sixty fourth wedding anniversary on March 73. They are parents of eight children, 45 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. The couple helped pioneer Uintah county in the early 1880s and have visited Mrs Koch, their daughter, over the past week at her home.

Big Dam Project Near Kremmling Employs 300 Men

Frank Daughtery of Steamboat Springs installs plumbing for housing buildings on the Green Mountain dam site along the Blue River southwest of Kremmling. The reclamation project will provide compensating water for the eastern slope. About 300 workers are employed in construction camps under the federal reclamation bureau.

Snow Insures Plentiful Water for 1939 Irrigation Season

State Engineer T B Humphreys reports February data from 38 weather stations and 18 cooperators show snowpack the greatest in state history. Reservoirs store ample water for irrigation with overall storage around normal to 40 percent above in some areas and below in others across the southwest to northeast, affecting irrigation prospects in Garfield Wayne San Juan Piute Sevier Daggett Tuchesne and Utah counties.
