Hatch to Visit Basin for July 7 Activities

Utah Senator Orrin Hatch will attend the dedication of the Uintah Basin Area Vocational Center in Roosevelt at 10 a.m. on July 7. He will address the Vernal Rotary Club at noon and meet with groups in the afternoon by appointment. A public barbecue at Merkley Park at 6 p.m. will be open to attendees.

Uintah School District Budget Hearing Sees Large Increase

The proposed 1977-78 Uintah School District Budget totals 0,215,666, up 925,304 from the 1977 fiscal year. Expenditures cover maintenance and operation 6,093,813, special transportation 968,000, capital outlay and debt service 1,548,552, school food services 429,035, tort liability 70,866, and recreation 84,800. Annual budget meeting set for Thursday, June 30 at 8:00 p.m. in the district offices.

Vernal City to hold protective code seminar for contractors

Vernal City plans a seminar led by city inspector Ron Stone to explain new Vernal City building requirements. The session at Uintah County Courthouse auditorium starts Thursday July 7 at 7 p.m. Topics include contractor pre qualifying licenses citations and code changes with engineering specs to be discussed and sold.

Basin Vocational Center to dedicate new building

The Uintah Basin Area Vocational Center dedicates its $25 million, 60,000 square foot facility east of Roosevelt. The Thursday ceremony at 10 a.m. features U S Senator Orrin Hatch, Utah officials, UBAYC leaders, and architects. The program includes tours, refreshments, and music by Union High School choir.

Disarmed man treated after family disturbance at Lazy River Trading Post

Charles Allred phoned Uintah County Sheriff's office when Mrs Matney and her two children reported Bascom Matney's violent mental relapse. Deputies disarmed him of a loaded .22 pistol, he received emergency care at Uintah County hospital, then was taken to a Veteran's Hospital in Salt Lake City for recuperation. His family stayed in Salt Lake City for safety.

Crash causes $3100 in damages west of Dutch John

A two vehicle crash eight miles south of Dutch John on June 24 resulted in $3100 total damages. A 1977 Chevrolet pickup owned by Vernal Fur and Hide Co. rear ended a recreation vehicle driven by Rex McClellan with three family members aboard. The Vernal vehicle sustained $1100 damage, the RV and occupants $2000, and no injuries were reported. Montgomery, the 18 year old driver, was cited for following too closely.

Rancher Escapes Death in Tractor Accident

Edward Jenkins of 878 North 3000 West was injured when his pant leg was caught in a tractor’s power take-off as he baled hay. He suffered a diagonal rib fracture and a punctured lung but refused to quit, returning to work after hospitalization. His wife Thelma and son-in-law Carl Bowthorpe assisted, with Carl continuing chores during Ed’s convalescence.
