Monopolies Aim to Disrupt Major Irrigation Plan
A coalition of private utilities seeks toll gates between the Hoover storage project power sources and delivery points, threatening irrigation plans for millions of acre feet in Colorado New Mexico Utah and Wyoming. The move could delay water storage projects vital to Upper Basin states.
Success of Colorado project threatened by utilities
The Colorado River Storage Project, a large Bureau of Reclamation effort, promises vast agricultural expansion, new jobs, and regional economic growth across Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona. Utilities seek to control key transmission lines at a fraction of costs, risking delayed irrigation projects and reduced power revenue used to fund water storage. If built by the Bureau as planned, the project would deliver 6 mills per kilowatt hour, generating over 1 billion to support irrigation over a 100 year payout, but the utilities plan could cut this substantially and delay much needed irrigation in the four Upper Basin states.
