Are We Wasting Irrigation Water in Ashley Ward Farm
Hyrum Toone owns an 87 acre farm in Ashley Ward and cooperates with the Ulotah Basin soil conservation district. The district and Soil Conservation Service planned irrigation tests to measure water needs and improve application. Tests on May 1, 1947 used a 750 foot run and 100 foot stations to track infiltration. results showed deep percolation at the upper end and overwatering, with water penetrating only 3 to 5 feet in parts of the field and wasting water beyond the effective root zone. Toone plans shorter runs and field beveling to uniform grades, seeking better efficiency and reduced waste.
