Arden Stewart of Vernal was elected Utah Department Commander at the close of the state convention. He succeeds H C McShane of Salt Lake City. The three day meeting drew about 400 Utah Legion and Auxiliary members. Charles L Bacon, National Commander, spoke at the Auxiliary banquet and other sessions praising the growth of the Legion and its public stance.

Holey Queen a two year old filly owned by Vaughn Wilkins Jensen nosed Haley Berry Dee in a photo finish to win the $31,000 Diamond Futurity at the Vernal Race Meet final. Seven races were run Sunday as 44 horses competed with VY Mitchell on the futurity winner.

Funeral for Zina Howard Held Monday
Funeral services for Mrs. Zina Batty Searle Howard 72, Vernal mother of several prominent businessmen, were held Monday at 11 am in Vernal First Ward chapel. Bishop Ben W. Lindsay conducted the service. Burial was at Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers were her sons Ray, Carl, Jay, Milton and Woodey Searle and a brother Don Batty. She was born January 15, 1890 in Wallsburg Wasatch County. She married Raymond M. Searle in 1907. he died in 1929. She later married William L. Howard in 1928. he died in 1900. She is survived by five Vernal sons 27 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Also four brothers and four sisters.

Embezzler Kendrick Sentenced in Utah Court
An 82 year old Wardington man, Ray Jasper Kendrick, was sentenced in Fourth Judicial District Court to one to ten years in the Utah State Penitentiary for embezzling a 1954 Oldsmobile and tools owned by Earl Rich of Vernal. Kendrick pleaded guilty May 28 and the case was referred to Probation and Parole before remand to the sheriff for delivery to the state prison warden.
