Plans Made for Free Riot at Iron Springs July 4th

In Vernal Utah a big July Fourth event is planned by the Vernal Gun Club at Iron Springs on Brush Creek Mountain. The free all day program includes trap and pistol shoots, archery, softball, log cutting, tug of war, car pulling, fly casting, and a band concert. Transportation and prizes are provided. A flag day crowd is expected with no admission charged.

Uintah Basin State's Best Fishing Area

The Uintah country in Utah hosts streams and high peaks as a wildlife haven. US 46 highway links Salt Lake City and Denver through a land where civilization meets wilderness. The state plans 2,000,000 legal sized fish planted statewide this year, with prior plantings already begun.

Boyd Massey Dies Suddenly in Vernal Family Mourns

Boyd Massey born November 13 1924 in Vernal died suddenly Thursday morning at 7 30 in the arms of his mother. He had been recovering from tonsil illness and was being cared for at his grandmother Mrs Jane Pope’s home. Survived by parents Sewell and Ora Massey two sisters Virginia and Bonna brothers Garrieta and Jarrel and grandmother Mrs Cynthia Massey. Funeral services will be held.

Lions Hear Park Men and View River Pictures

Vernal Lions Club heard National Parks Service and Rocky Mountain National Park representatives discuss a potential national park in the Yampa Canyon and Green River areas. Alton Hatch showed river trip films as parties plan visits to Browns Park Pats Hole Island Park and Split Mountain. Lions pledged support for park development and road rehab projects in the Basin.

County meeting in Vernal discussed rock asphalt as a PSW. Officials urged Eastern Utah civic clubs to convene a Uintah Basin meeting to press for rock asphalt use and to contact congressional delegates, Governor Blood, and the state road commission.

UBIC speakers named for August convention schedule

Attorney Ray E Dillman president of the UBIC announced a partial speaker list for the August 7 8 and 9 gathering. Willam R Wale tace Colorado River commissioner and State Water Storage Commission member heads the lineup along with Dr George Thomas II BYU president Dr F E Larris USAC president and Governor Henry Blood. Lee Kay of Utah State Fish and Game will give illustrated lectures each evening. The women’s department class work will be stressed and the Douglas Military band will perform. An expanded Indian program and a large turnout are anticipated with a preliminary camper count planned.

Improvement Work Begins at Whiterocks Hatchery

State funds of 5 200 will remodel and enlarge the Whiterocks Fish Hatchery in Uintah County. About twenty workers will be employed as the project adds a new water system six retaining walls and deck dams and expands ponds to lift output by about fifty percent. The upgrade aims to feed streams in Uintah Daggett and Duchesne counties with better water flow and hatchery facilities.

Army of Mormon Crickets Threaten Blue Mountain

Willis L. Johnson, chairman of the county commissioners, reports large Mormon cricket swarms on Blue Mountain. He warns the crickets, nearly half grown, can cause extensive damage unless destroyed soon by the Elk Springs OO camp. Eggs are laid in August with hatching next spring.

Glines Boy Scout Saves 4 Year Old Life

Vern Roberts a 13 year old Boy Scout from Glines ward saved Glenn Gregory 4 from drowning in the Ashley Central canal after the boy fell in. Kenneth Gregory 13 watched and helped as Vern used water safety techniques learned from the scout manual to pull the child to the bank. The grateful mother praised the scouts skill and courage.

Killing of Red Cap Told in Vernal Court

Isaac Saknikent an 87 year old Indian man pleaded guilty to second degree murder and was sentenced to ten years hard labor. He and his 16 year old son Kneale killed Robert Red Cap near Lapoint on May 8 after hours of drinking and talking while riding horses. The son testified through interpreters about the fight and stabbing with a pocket knife. A second fatal shot followed and the pair hid in the mountains before being turned in by Indian officials. The trial involved many local officials and relatives, with Judge Abe W. Turner conducting the hearing and interviewing the attendees.

Musician Cheney of New York Visits Vernal Utah

Cheney of New York formerly of Sanpete county and cashier of Uinted State Bank visited Vernal with his wife after an organ concert at the Salt Lake tabernacle. Carl Martin of the Deseret News describes crowds and a marvelous program. Cheney is head of music at the David Manners School in New York and a concert organist touring the East.

Elk Herd Observed Near Elk Park in Uintah County

Game warden Floyd Noel reported a herd of 12 elk near Elk Park with an uncounted number in the brush. He discussed fencing haystacks to protect ranches and urged cooperation from sportsmen, gun clubs, and residents for material and labor to reduce elk damage.

Lund brother of Salt Lake tabernacle choir leader dies

OFR Lund left Tuesday to visit his brother Anthony C Lund who led the Salt Lake tabernacle choir. He was stricken with a heart attack and died that day.
