Bids Opened for Uintah Senior High School Project

Uintah School Board opened bids for the new senior high school and related works. John E. Anderson of Salt Lake City won the building contract at 76000 dollars. Leslie Ashton Hardware Co of Vernal took the heating and plumbing at 24987 dollars. Additional bids were noted for Ouray valley and Tridel projects with quantities and bidders listed. A postbid inventory and club-use authorization were noted.

Leonard Petroleum Buys Raven Oil Holdings at Rangely

Leonard Petroleum company of Washington acquires Raven Oil and Refining holdings in the Rangely field, gaining shallow wells, a refinery, and about 6000 acres. Negotiations spanned nearly two years, with plans to drill Dakota sands and improve gasoline extraction, while a pipeline between Parco refinery and Moffat reduces transport delays.

Praises Tourist Camp Ground At City Park

A. Bedell of the Utah State board of health and Water Superintendent Frank Hatch visited Vernal to inspect sanitary conditions and the Ashley Central canal. Bedell praised the tourist camp ground for its accommodations and grounds as tourists from various regions praised it, noting a Seattle traveler called it the best ground he had seen this year. He suggested improving lawn care.

Memorial Oration At Myton Church Honors Veterans

Memorial exercises at Myton Presbyterian church drew large crowds on May 30 with Thos W O Donnell of Vernal delivering a masterly address. Civil and Spanish American War veterans attended alongside World War I veterans led by Roland Krebbs of the Warr Sands Post No 5. A fine musical program followed the oration, and short services were held at Myton cemetery.

District Court Closes Saturday After Week in Session

Judge L B Wight closed the June term of the district court after sessions since Monday. Criminal cases ended in guilty pleas. civil and probate matters continued. Several judgments were entered including against the Bank of Vernal and various defendants. A notable dispute over Oran Curry’s estate was dismissed for lack of grounds. Nine cases continued, no new divorces filed, and water rights extensions granted with Nile Hughes appointed water commissioner.

Vernal Lumber Company Starts on Warehouse Project

Vernal Lumber Company began construction of a 40 by 60 foot warehouse at the rear of its current store. George W. Baese announced rearrangement of two existing rooms for a larger lumber ware room to hold machinery and high class furnishings. Pallet and plumbing shop will be consolidated in one room.

Don C G Clayton Seeks State Treasurer Nomination

Don C G Clayton of Centerville Utah announces candidacy for state treasurer on the Republican ticket. Clayton a longtime Davis County state representative and former secretary to Senator Reed Smoot and Justice Sutherland has been active in politics since age 21.

State Game Commissioner brings 600000 fish eggs to Whiterocks Hatchery

State Game Commissioner DU H Madsen delivered 600000 native and rainbow trout eggs to Whiterocks Hatchery. The facility now holds 260000 rainbow fry ready for planting in 30 days, to be distributed via streams and lakes by three Basin gun clubs. New superintendent J Larson, replacing William H Cook who resigns after two years, will train at Springville plant.

New High School Key Factor in Local Home Sale

Miller and Thomas realty agents sold the Bert Young home in the east Vernal area to Mr. Edwards, a Lone Tree stockman, who will move his family here after learning a new senior high school was planned. Edwards, with several children to attend the U H 8, expressed great satisfaction with Vernal country. He arrived with Wiley 8 and Orrin Collett.

Brush Creek Above Sinks Closed to Fishermen

The state fish and game department of Utah orders the closure of Brush Creek above the sinks to fishing to allow trout propagation. Vernal Gun Club planted many trout last year and expects spawning by next year. One stream per county will be closed annually.

Union Oil Plans Deep Well Test at Elk Springs

Thomas Morgan, proprietor of the famous branch, said Union Oil and California concern will start a deep well test at Elk Springs within ten days. Elk Springs lies about 40 miles east of the branch and 26 miles northeast of the Senet basin where Emerald Oil wells are leased to Raven Oil and Refining Company.

Stake Mutuals Give Neat Sum to Soldier Memorial Monument

The stake boards Young Men's Mutual Improvement association and the Young Ladies Mutual Improvement association of the Uintah stake each pledged and gave 315.00 to the Uintah County Soldier Memorial Monument. The $30.00 was placed in the bank on Saturday.

Commissioners Have Busy Week at June Meeting

At the June county commissioners meeting all members were present. Actions include a $160 grant for bee inspection, Ellis Morkley named bee inspector, plans for a courtroom vault, a voting precinct petition approved, aid for cricket destruction on Diamond Mountain, Slaugh named assistant constable with Miller, dictating machine sold for $80, and multiple registration officers appointed. Equalization sessions held throughout the week.

Judge L B Wight of the third judicial district in Salt Lake City, on the district court bench last week, made his first trip to the Utah Basin section. He praised Vernal and the Ashley Valley and plans to bring Mrs Wight for a summer vacation.

Collett Posts $200 Bond After Liquor Arrest

Mark Collett of the White River area was jailed for a week on a liquor possession charge. Sheriff L Richardson arrested him during a home search and he posted a $200 cash bond Monday. Justice N J Hansen scheduled a preliminary hearing for June 23. another man, Red Branfield, fled the scene and is believed to be in Colorado.

Three Basin Gun Clubs to Contest at Roosevelt

Four Wells Spud In Moffat County

Craig June 4 Four drills are now exploring the sands of Moffat county in search of oil. More wells will begin within ten days as several rigs move to new locations. A local firm won the heating and plumbing bid for the new high school. The winning bid totaled $24,987 from Leste Ashton Hardware Company. The competing local bidder was George W. Baese of Vernal Lumber Company.
