State and county crews begin paving from Vernal toward Maeser with seven miles of gravel laid from Lapoint eastward and a plan to connect Vernal Memorial Park via a paved drive. Upgrades include draining improvements at Ashley Creek and a proposed road bed from Ashton corner toward the park entrance, with work under Stan Lo Robbins.
Mrs Paul T Masck of Salt Lake City opens Olsen Cafe with experienced waitress and operator skills. James Abplanalp takes over line management of Slaugs Confectionery and plans to rename it The Founders Cafe amid planned build life changes.
Two groups of youthful exhibitors starred at the Junior Livestock Show at Salt Lake Union Stock Yards this week. Vernal youths led by mentors and instructors contributed many standout entries including portmanship prize contenders and calf letters from local 4 H clubs with names such as Lloyd Sehlapp Ralph Preece Larsen and Chauncey Pensaid Lapoint among others.
Dexter, president of Lions International and former Whittier College president, will address the opening session of the Vernal district convention on Friday morning June 1. He has long promoted Lions goals, goodwill and service, and helped shape the organization’s early objectives.
Uintah County Commissioners met Wednesday to ratify a strict economy policy as the general fund dwindles. In a finance focused session they approved hospital support in Roosevelt with a 10000 cash pledge this year and another 10000 next year, borrowed 250000 from local banks, and ordered 200 pounds of spudrum chiorde from the state agriculture office to aid county needs.
A new plan for growing diamonds was introduced by Sather Jewelry. The proposal describes producing both large and small stones by successive growth, funded by small weekly deposits. Jesse Watt, John Anderson, and a Draper of Heber City attended a Vernal meeting last Thursday to discuss the proposal with the Liens committee.
A broad building program aims to support a record tourist year in Vernal. New auto courts, service stations, garages, stores, and homes rise as Highway 40 improves to handle transcontinental travel. The Commercial hotel adds twelve deluxe cabins and expansion continues at several nearby properties.
Elin Cook of Vernal died of pneumonia on June 4. Funeral services were conducted in Naples with Bishop LaVell Manwaring in charge. Interment at Vernal Memorial Park followed. She was a pioneer migrant to Ashley Valley and mother to four children with many stepchildren and grand and great grandchildren. Her charitable life and friendship to those in need were noted.
Vernal hosts two state Lions clubs with Utah and Idaho leaders arriving for a five hundred-member convention. events include parades, Green Lakes trip, dinosaur national monument visit, bands, and a governors banquet with installation of new officers.
Vernal Seniors edge Senors 4 to 3 after late-inning scoring in a close Sunday game. CCC squads beat Masadona CCC 18 to 6 though early innings were tight. Upcoming games set for June 11 with Vernal Juniors vs Roosevelt and Bridgeland vs Masadona CCC, Montwell hosting Ft Duchesne.
UBIC committee meeting in Ft Duchesne discussed an exhibit by Mountain States Telephone Company for educational purposes at the UBIC Indian Fair. L H Mitchell and Horace Allred will present irrigation and soil conservation demonstrations with 1800 trout prepared for a fish fry. Tables will seat 400 at Green Lakes.
Reports from May openings show many anglers scoring limits on Trout streams. Bundas Throngs crowded Touriigh Creek as test waters rose high, with locals like Quen Hacking and Clark Newell landing limits within hours. Ashley Creek and Brush Creek also saw anglers limit out, signaling a strong start to the season.
Four Uintah Basin students will graduate with honors from Brigham Young University according to an announcement by registrar Kenneth C. Aygo. Named among thirty receiving honors are Waunte Johnson of Verma Harriet Carma Wilson and Leland M Wiscombe of Roosevell.
