Vernal attorney nominated for district judge race

At the Democratic Judicial convention in Heber City Tess day afternoon of the fourth judicial district Dallas H. Young was nominated with Judge Abel Turner as district judge candidates. Arnold Toylance was nominated district attorney. Clyde Johnson was vice chairman with Arnold Toylance as chairman. Uintah Basin Soil Survey Starts Loon

A Logan meeting involved representatives from the Soil Conservation Service and Utah State Agricultural College to supervise a cooperative, detailed study of Uintah Basin land and water resources. Vernal Lions Return From International Convention

Vernal Lions Glen Miter DeVere Carrol and Golda Massry returned Monday night from the Lions International convention in Providence Rhode Island after traveling over 438 miles amid warm weather in Kansas and Missouri. Uintah Basin Rodeo Set for September 10 11 12

The Uintah Basin Rodeo planned for September 10 11 and 12 features a parade big entertainment and improved facilities at Fall Grounds Vernal Utah. Committees led by Stringham Weeks and Colton outline preparations with racing bucking roping and horse acts. Twenty five Scouts and Scoutmasters from Vernal troops 232 and 231 returned Saturday from the Ferron encampment where heavy rains ruined roads and bridges forcing a move from Petty mountain in Duchesne county. Rangely Oil Field Given Another Test

Eighteen men and heavy equipment from Dallas arrive to carry out a ten day seismic test at Rangely oil field. The crew uses dynamite to blast test holes about 300 feet deep while the seismograph records the blasts to aid geological assessments. Dr Clark Buys Interest in Bullock and Clark Hospital

Dr John II Clark purchased the interest of Dr W I K Bullock in the Bullock and Clark hospital this week and assumed full charge. Dr Bullock reported for two weeks training with the US Army Medical Officers Reserve at Fort Lewis and plans to settle in the Northwest, possibly Idaho. An associate is expected soon, a nurse will be added, and the hospital will be renamed the Clik Hospital with a new neon sign over the entrance.

County Valuations of Improved Property Reduced by 12 for Cent

County Clerk F L Noel announced this week that the state tax commission approved a 12 per cent reduction in valuations of all improved property in the county. The cut lowers the total improved property valuations by 103 156 from 823 250. In Ages county the change affects all taxable real estate in the district.

Uncovering Fossils at Jensen Quarry Only Begun Says Head

Dr Barnum Brown of the American Museum of Natural History leads 100 workers at the Jensen quarry to expose a dinosaur fossil bed. The project, run with National Forest Service and WPA labor, will carve fossils in rock as a permanent bas-relief museum, not remove them, with a shelter 40 feet high and 200 feet long to protect the site.

Central National Highway Would Penetrate Basin

The Library board in Vernal seeks funds for a county library expansion as Lions Club plans an amateur night at the Us auditorium and the Chamber of Commerce sponsors Dogs Beach event next Wednesday. Dr S B X Johnson, lauded as the national Apostle of good roads, promotes a Central National highway from Denver through Utah along US 40, potentially reducing Denver distance by 200 miles. He urges Utah cooperation to attract tourism, calling southern Utah a "perfect wonderland" and predicting high returns on highway investment. The plan envisions a 200-foot right of way, two 20-foot lanes, with shrubbery for night driving.
