A Nash car from Pacific Nash Motor Co driven by Ab Jenkings with Scott Cooper and C F Dodge set a record time from Salt Lake City to West Yellowstone. The trip covered 383 miles with eight hours thirty nine minutes running time and an average speed of 44.3 mph.
The Unitah Railway company applied to the public utilities commission for a one year extension to complete its Watson and Bonanza branches in Unitah County. It previously received extensions from the Interstate Commerce Commission to December 31, 1926, and had a federal start deadline of July 11, 1922 with completion by December 31, 1923. The Utah commission only requires extensions to occur within a reasonable time. The company argues demand has fallen, hauling 55,670 tons of gilsonite in 1920 vs 8,359 tons in 1921, and asserts current low demand means continued construction is not justified, though it reserves the right to seek further extension if warranted.
Washington July 11. In 1920 Utah ranked high for per capita property tax, with $8.16 per person. Yet the tax per $1,000 of assessed valuation was $6.15, lower than eighteen states. Nevada led per capita at $18.47 but $5.84 per $1,000. Washington per capita $12.82 and $14.68 per $1,000, the heaviest in the nation. Idaho $7.12 per capita and $6.20 per $1,000. Wyoming per capita $7.91 and $3.98 per $1,000.
Don B. Colton of Vernal and E O Leatherwood each won renomination by acclaim at Utah Republican conventions. Colton was unanimously chosen in the First District at Hotel Utah. Leatherwood secured solid support in the Second District at the New House Hotel. Colton praised the party, warned against Democratic camouflage, and touted wartime policies and disarmament progress.

Jamey Freestone reports crickets in the Diamond area have devastated nearly all crops. He criticizes a three year old policy of not destroying small cricket swarms, predicting the pests may not pass until all farmland is ruined.
Last Saturday in Salt Lake City market prices show white cherries at five cents per pound, fancy black cherries at six cents per pound, and potatoes at ten pounds for twenty five cents.
Elijah Bartlett of Canton, after decades of rumors and failed trails, reunited with his long lost sister Clara Burton of Vernal Utah. A letter from Birmingham England confirming another sister’s death helped trace the family. Bartlett plans to visit Vernal with his wife and grandson Harold after learning of the reunion through Salt Lake City police and Deseret Semi-Weekly notices.
Myron, a 13 year old from Mountain Home, was seriously injured Thursday near Duschesne when a hay wagon overturned on a dugway. He was unconscious, treated at Duschesne, then moved to Vernal for a skull x ray. He regained awareness Sunday. surgery decision pending. Evana Wilkins, sister of Bishop Georg E Wilkins, is present with Mrs Lyons.
Supt H S Olson arrived Sunday from Prova where he attended summer school to join the fathers and sons outing. He came with his son Loyal and his brother Ceorre F Olson principal of Fairview schools, visiting for the event before returning to school duties.
Ernest Bamberger, longtime Republican National Committee member from Utah, won the party's nomination for the U S Senate on the first ballot. Ballot results showed Kate Bamberger 357, William H. Wattis 182, J Reuben Clark 33, and William Spry 21. Other nominees included J W Cherry for state supreme court and Dr C N Jensen for state superintendent. Delegates from Salt Lake and Weber counties sparked debate over the unit rule and convention procedures.
Special to the Express reports a major blaze at Fort Duchesne destroying about 200 tons of baled hay 20 tons of grain farm machinery four wagons mowers a wire shed two barns and a hay stack. Charley Reed and family saved their nearby house as flames were brought under control with help from local workers and the fire department estimates show damage around 50000 dollars.
Monday Mr and Mrs Walter Barnes and Mr and Mrs Bryant Stringham left for an outing in Steamboat Springs. Mr Barnes will log roads and perform inspection work.
The Legion Auxiliary leg of Ashley valley conducts Home Beautiful contest judging wards. Judges praise cleanliness and garden improvements, listing top wards and residents with high scores. Naples and Davis wards lag behind and are not yet seriously considered.
Special to the Express from Randlett dated July 14 reports a Sunday afternoon blaze that consumed a barn, three sets of harness, one stear, and the first cutting of hay. Witnesses say a cigarette stump or smatch from a smoker likely sparked the fire, possibly from a chimney spark. A span of fine horses perished in the flames.
A letter from the Utah Manufacturers Association to Vernal’s commercial club outlines a Inter Mountain development campaign starting August 1. The league would coordinate civic, social, and business groups including churches and schools to promote Utah’s resources. 80 days of outreach led by C. E. Arney will visit sections to drum up support. An upcoming August 223 holiday event will feature exhibitors and product samples to explain the plan, with Vernal possibly joining.
Crickets, resembling those that attacked Utah lands seventy years ago, invade northeast Cache Valley in Franklin Preston Whitney area. They infest a 1.5 mile by ten mile tract, with a canal curbing spread. Farmers deploy gtrychnine parle green arsenic lead and other measures, but crickets persist.
Representative E. O. Leatherwood of Utah plans to visit the Dead Man's Bench irrigation project on the lower White River in southeastern Utah. A five engineer team led by R. R. Robertson will depart Denver Tuesday to conduct preliminary investigations under a cooperative state and federal agreement. Mr. Robertson, an investigator with the reclamation service, recently moved from Nebraska to Utah for this field work.
