Economist Analyzes Varying Costs of Consumer Credit
The USDA Research Service reviewed consumer installment loans in Washington DC and found true annual interest rates ranging from 7 to 36 percent. Smaller loans often carried higher rates than larger ones with examples showing 34 percent on 100 dollars, 17 percent on 500, and 15 percent on 1,000 dollars. Loan term also shaped costs, with a $2,000 car loan at 7 44 percent for 12 months versus 10 percent for 36 months and total interest of 82 dollars compared to 323 dollars.
