Utah Welcomes Chapman's Echo Park Split Mountain Approval

Interior Secretary Oscar L. Chapman approved Echo Park and Split Mountain dams in Utah as a preliminary step. The move enables the Bureau of Reclamation to finish its Colorado River Storage report for next Congress, with final funding to be sought from lawmakers. Echo Park would cost about 140 million dollars and Split Mountain about 65 million, to be repaid from power and water revenues. The decision, praised by Utah officials and civic groups, marks a major developmental advance despite the ongoing funding battle. The 21 Counties committee and Vernal civic bodies credited the effort, and the fight continues as fronts shift toward securing congressional appropriations.
