Fire gutting Verdin K R Johnson Store at Maeser
A major blaze Tuesday afternoon destroyed the Verdin K R Johnson Store in Maeser Ashley Valley. Firefighters faced no water supply as an irrigation ditch ran dry and the water main was cut. Johnson had expanded the business with groceries, a service station, and recently sold his dairy herd to stock up. no wind prevented damage to his home nearby. Insurance reportedly covered the loss.

Huge Granite Shaft Dedicated July 4 at Jensen
A July 4 dedication at Jensen unveiled a granite monument to Escalante near the Green River bridge on the Victory highway. Miss Janice M Overfield unveiled it as Captain Stephen Abbott led ceremonies with Rev T F Butler and Don Colton’s speeches. A Lions Club rep accepted the monument. Howard Mendenhall directed community singing. about 200 autos joined the event.

Independence Day Celebration in Roosevelt Draws Large Crowd

Pioneer Day Parade Sparks Vernal July 24 Celebration
Vernal plans a large Pioneer Day event with a child themed parade featuring 600 youths in costumes and 34 floats. Accident near Maybell injures occupants of Buick
An accident about four miles below Maybell Colorado on July 2 left Thomas Gentry, father of Mrs Hazel Hackler, struck by a Buick eight en route to Craig. If Gentry’s car had moved, all occupants could have been killed or badly injured as four wheels crashed, two doors torn off, steering wheel broken, and the car demolished.

On Friday morning of last week JL J Belanger suffered a crushing injury to the middle finger of his right hand while operating a jeh press in the mechanical department. The end of the finger was amputated to save the rest of the hand.

Explosion at Burclay hotel blinds windows and damages awning
Firecrackers exploded west of the Commercial Hotel Burclay breaking glass and setting the awning and curtains on fire. A guest stopped the blaze before it worsened. Two to three automobile tops were also damaged by the same incident.
