Public Hearing on Steinaker Dam Near Vernal
About 60 Ashley Valley water users packed the county courthouse for a public hearing on the Bureau of Reclamation plan to appropriate 50 000 acre feet from Ashley Creek for the Steinaker Draw reservoir. Engineer Eugene Nielsen testified for the bureau stating the dam would reclaim 4360 acres and supplement 2840 irrigated acres, with the new land southeast of Vernal in the Davis ward area. Opponents argued about water quality and surplus water, while plans show the Steinaker Draw dam about three miles north of Vernal, 120 feet high and capable of holding about 15 500 acre feet.
