Public Hearing on Steinaker Dam Near Vernal

About 60 Ashley Valley water users packed the county courthouse for a public hearing on the Bureau of Reclamation plan to appropriate 50 000 acre feet from Ashley Creek for the Steinaker Draw reservoir. Engineer Eugene Nielsen testified for the bureau stating the dam would reclaim 4360 acres and supplement 2840 irrigated acres, with the new land southeast of Vernal in the Davis ward area. Opponents argued about water quality and surplus water, while plans show the Steinaker Draw dam about three miles north of Vernal, 120 feet high and capable of holding about 15 500 acre feet.

Range Fire Burns 400 Acres on Diamond Mountain

Officials stated a wind driven range fire scorched about 400 acres on Diamond Mountain in the Uintah Basin. The blaze started Sunday and was brought under control Sunday night with grazing service workers and storkmen assisting. Johnny Freestone supervised the fire fighting efforts for the grazing service.

Playground Opens At City Park

Twenty five youngsters attended the opening day of playground activities at City Park under the city county recreation department. Erlahd Preece and Edith Sanostik organized the program. Regular playground sessions run Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 pm to 5 pm.

Geology students from Utah U on 10 day field course

Utah University geology students begin a ten day field course with Dr Brimon Stangham leading a program in the Tinta mining district and surrounding areas. The group recently spent a month surveying underground and surface workings while studying Asphalt Ridge and White Rocks deposits assisted by Dr T P Remy of Utah Chemical and Oil Company.

County Bureau Seeks Tyack Road Link to Project Site

The county board discussed a proposed five mile road to the project site to speed work and improve completion prospects. County deputy treasurer Lola Anderson and deputy clerk Norma Anderson received raises to 120 per month. County ag agent William Whitaker voted 5180 for Utah State Fair participation. Andrew Vernon Ashley Valley Bee Inspector reported 36 apiaries in the valley, 1742 colonies, 18 diseased, 10 treated, 8 gassed. County cost: 103.50. Vernon warned phoney crop prospects are poor as bees enter honey season in weak condition after spring feeding.

Election Interest Lukewarm In Uintah County July Primary

Voter interest in Uintah County Utah’s July 9 primary appeared tepid with about 1000 likely voters casting ballots next Tuesday. Polls open 7 am to 9 pm. Candidates for sheriff and county commission seek party nominations, while registrars urge new residents to register.

Jaycees Plan Sunday Air Show At Local Airport

Jaycees complete plans for a Veterans Air Show at the Vernal airport next Sunday. The event, aided by Sky Harbor Flying Service, features acrobatic acts by Herb Madman Page Dorothy Barden Lyla White and others with parachute and batwing demonstrations. Proceeds benefit the Jaycee hospital fund and prizes are awarded in leading contests and bombing events.

Vernal Pioneer Lydia Kempton Dies Here at 87

Funeral services were held for Lydia Dorothy Kempton 87 at Swain Funeral Home. She died January 21 at Mrs Mac Ruple’s home in Vernal. Interment was in Vernal Memorial Park. Born December 27 1850 in Salt Lake City she moved to Ashley Valley as a child and married Tan Kempton. Survivors include two sons Roy and Warren of Vernal, two daughters Edith Kempton of Old Mexico and Mrs Andy Gibson of Panhandle, and six grandchildren. Her widowed years followed Mr Kempton’s death in 1883.

Vernal Fourth Program Slated For City Park

Vernal officials plan a July Fourth patriotic program at the city park with Mayor B H Stringham and Tenney Johnston of the Vernal Junior Chamber as speakers. Mrs. J M Francke will highlight the musical segment. The day includes a band concert, recreational activities by Uintah County recreation department, tennis at city park courts, children's games, flag ceremony at 10:45 am, and events continuing at Uintah High School gym. Vernal Realty softball teams also compete at 2:30 pm.
