Utah Girl Wins High Honors in National Meat Poster Contest

Miss Dana Hawkes of Salt Lake City earned the state championship in the National Livestock and Meat Board meat poster contest. About 12,558 students from 10 high schools nationwide participated. Hawkes’s poster highlighted meat’s nutritive value and recent university findings on meat as a central diet component.

Funeral Services Held Friday for Wm Richardson

Funeral services for William Richardson Sr. 83 were held Friday at the Vernal Second Ward chapel. The service featured remarks by Lewis Gardiner and Byron Goodrich, musical tributes by the Naples ward quartet and others, and pallbearers included grandsons John and Ralph Walker and Ace J. Walker. Interment followed at Vernal Memorial Park under Swain Funeral Home.

Alexander Confectionery Installs Ice Cream Plant in Fountain

Alexander Confectionery owner Ralph G. Alexander installs an electric counter freezer for ice cream at the Fountain shop. The display attracts customers and boosts sales of picnic and package ice cream since the installation two weeks ago. The plant can freeze 2012 gallons in 12 minutes and requires 15 hours to harden before use. Alexander plans to serve retail trade only and may later manufacture all products on site as powder mix is now bought in Salt Lake City.

County Amends Beer Ordinance Sunday Closing

The county commission at their regular meeting June 28 amended the beer license ordinance to $50 for sale throughout the county and ordered all saloons to close at 11 p.m. nightly and remain closed all day Sunday. Mayor Cooper and several city officials urged a uniform countywide rule. The board unanimously adopted Sunday closure, while other items include license fee adjustments, a wholesale license referral, and bids for reservoir and school levy considerations.

Barnum Brown Visits Dinosaur Quarry Friday

Dr. Barnum Brown curator of the American Museum of Natural History and J. T. Bird photographed at Dinosaur National Monument on Thursday and Friday. Brown from Wyoming reports progress under Dr. A. Boyle and hopes overburden removal and bas relief exposure begin soon. A new find in Mesa Verde formation is noted as younger than those at the monument. They then traveled to Grand Junction, Colorado.

Buck Pasture Reservoir Gets Presidential Approval

A wire from Congressman Abe Murdock reports Buck Pasture Oak Park reservoir project won presidential approval. Work to start within ten days with heavy machinery already on site. Project cost near $100,000 and aims to complete early in the planned phase.

Funeral rites for Edwin J. Austin in Maeser ward chapel

Funeral services for Edwin J. Austin of Crawford Colorado are set for 2:00 p m Friday at the Maeser ward chapel under the ward bishopric. Born May 3 1830 in South Wales England he lived in Vernal since 1903 before moving to Colorado to cattle work. Survived by his widow five sisters and a brother with ties to Vernal and England through the Austin family.

Vernal Student Achieves High Rating at Henager College

Neldon Richens son of Mr and Mrs LeRoy Richens of Ashley Utah is a student at Henager Business College in Salt Lake City. He earned top scholastic standing over eight months, received a gold award two medals and a pint. He was rated highest in accounting among students, among the five fastest in typewriting and averaged 21 3 in commercial law. He won honorable mention from the school president in a student assembly.

Vernal Coach Named Assistant County Agent in Uintah

Carl G. Davis longtime coach and teacher at Springville and Uintah high schools has taken the role of assistant agricultural agent in Bast Lake county, succeeding Willian H. Bennett who moves elsewhere. Davis, a Utah State Agricultural College alumnus, was noted for athletics and civic activity in Vernal, including Lions and Rifle clubs and LDS church work. He played basketball and track, captaining the Aggies to the Rocky Mountain Conference title in 1930, and starred for Uintah High School in basketball.

Four Auto Thieves Jailed in Uintah County

The Sunday arrest of Paul Dunn 22 and Oliver Neil 19 both Dayton Ohio residents led Uintah County officers to jail four auto thieves the largest number jailed for auto theft in state history. The entry details their cross state spree from Blacksfoot Idaho to Seda Springs Utah and Green Lakes to Evanson Wyoming with stolen cars and gas thefts. Idaho will handle gas theft charges. Day Program Brings Fun for All Ages at Vernal Event

The Day Program offers tennis finals for junior and senior players, a patriotic band concert by Alin High School, children’s sports, novelty races, and a bicycle race. Highlights include a daylight Fourth of July salute, pre celebration dance at Doc's Beach, and evening dances. Eight Year Old Boy of Jensen Lands a 25b White Fish

Eight year old Max Stewart son of Mr and Mrs Ramsay Stewart proved the claim of campion Sherman of United County by landing a 25 pound white fish from the Green River while fishing with his father near the old gold dredge on the east side of Dinosaur National Monument. Max wrestled the fish for a hundred feet along the riverbank before landing it with help. He also caught seven channel catfish averaging about three pounds. Mrs S G Woolley of Salt Lake City arrived for an extended visit with her sister Mrs Lloyd Winn and planned to continue on to Leadville Colorado.

Pioneer Round Up to Honor Uintah Stake MIA July 24

The Uintah MIA Stake Board sponsors a July 24 Pioneer Round Up from 10:00 a.m. at Preece Canyon north of Vernal to commemorate pioneers’ arrival in the Salt Lake Valley. Each company performs in a circle with costumes and a barbecue, old-time music, pioneer stories, and a dance. Committees led by Leonard Perry and Frank W. Wright oversee sports, program, concessions, publicity, and arrangements.
