Forest Timber Loss From Disease and Insects Surpasses Fires
The Forest Service reports Utah losses from disease and insects in 1934 to 1943 outpacing fires, with 15 million cubic feet versus eight million from fire. Nationwide losses totaled 6.22 billion cubic feet to disease and insects, while fire caused 4.6 billion. Colorado suffered the heaviest Rocky Mountain impact, prompting a long running control program begun in 1950. Chief Forester Lyle Watts cautions losses remain high even with controls and asserts 25 percent of national commercial forest land is well managed.
