Snow Aids but Experts See Thirsty Summer
Snow in the Uintah Basin eases drought on public lands but the forecast calls for a poor water supply next summer. Eastern Utah precipitation over the past four months ran well below normal, with Duchesne and Strawberry River basins showing under 50 percent of normal. Hydrologist Eugene Pack cautions that if below normal conditions persist, water-year flows could fall to 65 percent for upper Strawberry and Price rivers, with Duchesne River near 80 percent of average. Ashley Creek near Vernal expected at 78 percent, Tahiona Duchesne at 85 percent, and Myton Duchesne at 61 percent of 15-year averages.
