Guadala canal hero Lawrence Swain recalls air borne battles on Guadacanal Island. He describes jungle chases and jap machine gun fire, notes many comrades killed, and recounts a near miss when a shell exploded nearby during a marine defense action.
Milton Beare writes from Guadacanal describing front line duties on his birthday and uncertainty about home leave. A captain commends his fine work and good spirit. The letter mentions family readers in Roosevelt and the Roosevelt Standard, with notes on military promotions and service of relatives in the Army Air Forces and Navy.
Major Hugh W Colton a former Vernal attorney and rancher, promoted to Lt Colonel on December 29 at Fort Lewis Washington. He previously organized Co B 115th Engineers, joined federal service in March 1941, served in the 33rd Engineers at Fort Lewis, and was promoted to Major in June 1942.
R L Marimon was installed as a new Board of Education member at the monthly meeting. He is a Pomona College graduate and director of Uintah Power and Light, with prior work at Pacific Telephone. He urged improved facilities and road access for bus routes to equalize countywide opportunities.
Washington January 6 Representative Troblison Utah plans to restore about 81000 acres to Uintah and Ouray Reservation and 159000 acres to public domain. Previous bills failed in the Senate. The measure cites tribal ownership, public domain needs, and economic consolidation for better land use.
Washington moves to ease rationing by starting a ration bank system January 27 to streamline coupon handling. The program, first tested in New York industrial areas, has wholesalers and dealers depositing coupons with separate bank accounts, using banks as clearing houses to replenish stock.
Nickolas J Meagher Jr was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Army Quartermaster Corps at St Camp Lee Virginia last week and is now stationed at Ft Reno Oklahoma. He is the son of Cashier N J Meagher of the Bank of Vernal and attended the University of Utah for two years where he took ROTC and majored in law at Notre Dame. He was admitted to the bar in 1940 and later enlisted in the Army Reserve for training at Harvard University.
Clarence F Bargent representative of the Office of Defense Transportation will visit Vernal Utah January 21 22 and 23 to help commercial vehicle operators appeal for adjusted certificates of war necessity from the Salt Lake district office. Local UBDA war board transportation committees handle operator appeals. Immediate vetting is urged to issue amended certificates of war necessity by January 31 before gasoline allotments expire.
The Office of Price Administration delays the first tire inspection deadline and reduces subsequent checks. Holders of designation A books gain until end of March for initial inspection. B and C books until end of February. DT postpones commercial vehicle first inspection to Feb 28. After first inspection, A book holders check every six months, B and C every three months, and commercial tires every 66 days or 5000 miles as appropriate.
Funeral services for Ruth May Hall Caldwell were held at the First Ward chapel Tuesday at 1 p.m. with RD Rust presiding. An organ prelude by Mrs John Stag, and the opening hymn The Old Rugged Cross were rendered by a double mixed quartet including May Jorgensen Calder Lambert Dorhces-Parent Caldwell Wallis and Lundell. Harren Conover, editor of the Springville Herald, was elected president of the Utah State Press Association at the annual convention in Salt Lake City. Frank Beckwith of Delta and Ray Schorman of Duchesne were among officers elected, with Albert W. Epperson reelected secretary treasurer. Schorian suffered a heart attack during a Keamis Field tour and was hospitalized but improving early in the week. Aleve Chepuras Meeker sheep man made a formal visit on Monday and Tuesday.

James Coupe former manager of the Vernal Milling Co died in a Los Angeles hospital after a paralytic stroke Tuesday night His body will be brought to Vernal for burial Services will be held at the First Ward chapel Saturday He had lived in California for fifteen years and is survived by his wife three sons and a daughter Roy Coupe of Bremerton Washington Clair Coupe and Shirley Coupe of Los Angeles and Mrs Thelma Evans of Los Angeles
The State Salvage Committee announced a will week urging cemeteries to surrender iron fences to the salvage effort. Fourteen fences are in Vernal Memorial Park alone, with one fence weighing about one and a half tons. Emery Smith Royal Smith Walter Smith and Tin Butters, noted Duchesne area men, visited here Priday.
Mobilization Day is set for Monday January 18 as farmers and ranchers join the war effort to boost food production. Officials announce targets for 1943 including pig, cattle, wool, and milk outputs, urging higher meat and dairy supplies to support soldiers abroad and families at home.
Pfc Dale M Barger son of James Marger of Vernal received a navy letter of commendation for distinguished conduct during the Midway Island attack last June. The citation notes his superb conduct and hazard to self as he and two others left a dugout to start a power generator, upholding naval service traditions.
Superintendent H Grant Vest addressed Witbeck Post of the American Legion at Uintah State Bank to rally support for Utah schools. He outlined plans to use surplus state funds totaling 2,100,000 for education with 350,000 for uniform shoe funds and additional per county allocations. Vest praised the Legion and Uintah State Bank for backing school funding efforts and noted a forthcoming contest for Uintah and Alterra Schools.
Roosevelt City Mayor George H Harrison was installed as president of the Utah State Municipal League during the installation meeting in Silt Leake in January. Proposals to repeal the state sales tax were tabled in view of the new policy.
Bill King received his wings in the OU 8 Army Air Corps at Roswell New Mexico last week and was commissioned a flight officer. He will be stationed at Blythe California with Co A 116th Engineers previously in Lis Obispo and National City. He has been in the Air Corps since June 1942. John H Wittner a long time extension agent from Clare county Utah was honored at the National Association of County Agricultural Agents meeting in Chicago He received the distinguished service certificate from committee chair H E Abbott Wittner a Utah State Agricultural College graduate served as a University of Nevada extension agent in Clark and Uintah counties since 1921 and resided in Vernal Utah The award recognizes his decades of service to agriculture in his region.
