Crow King of the Crow Nation Defies Medicine Men
Crow King, a noted War Chief of the Crow and brother of Crow Wing, challenged Sioux ritual healers during a period of superstition. He faced and toppled the clan shamans by publicly confronting their charms, leading to a decline in medicine men’s power among the Sioux and earning lasting esteem among the Hidatsa and Crow people. He fought at Fort Phil Kearney and led charges at Little Bighorn before returning to lead on Standing Rock. He died in 1886 after earning respect as a statesman and warrior.
