The Utah Heart Association urges teenagers and adults to quit or never start smoking. It cites studies linking cigarette use to higher heart disease and death risk, with heavy smokers facing 50 to 200 percent higher death rates than non-smokers. Parents should set a non smoking example to reduce teen smoking.
The Red Cloud Meat Makers organize under Roland Merkhey in Maeser and Dry Fork for the year. Members plan Fat Beef Fat Lambs and Fat Hogs projects. The club has many programs and activities lined up. The Association notes that coronary heart disease will not decline with smoking cessation. It defines a high risk group including those with family history of heart attack or stroke, middle age, high blood pressure, and elevated blood fats. Data analysis shows cigarette smoking links to about 60,000 premature male deaths annually from coronary disease, roughly matching increases from other diseases.
Nesom Ricks Creamery Co of Salt Lake City buys Uintah Creamery Co’s Altamont plant from Federated Dairy Farms Assn. Myron Walker says the plant will expand cheese production for Utah and Southern California under the Banquet label. Previously it made condensed milk for ice cream.

In Vernal, Glen T. Walker learns his buffalo permit from a Fish and Game drawing is void. The Utah dept says only nine permits will be issued, and Walker’s number fell short. Brucellosis tests found fewer reactor buffalo than expected, ending his chances.
Uintah Knife and Fork Club hears Renee Taylor recounts her visit to Hunza Land a remote regal valley in the Karakoram range described as free of crime poverty and jails with 30 000 friendly inhabitants and a unique geopolitical perch, at Hotel Vernal Saturday night.
Construction of the Ute tribal water system continues after holidays. Kloepfer Construction Co. of Logan reports progress aided by mild winter and Accelerated Public Works funds. About 12 percent complete with first payment of 11 277.84 for pipes. The system will serve Ft Duchesne Ranch, Indian Beach, Roosevelt and Gusher with total cost near 800 000 dollars. R W Curry resources director says applications for service will begin as connections are installed.
