How Vernal Utah Got Its Name and Rise of the City
An historical recount explains how Ashley Center became Vernal. The name Vernal, favored for its springy tone, prevailed after Blythe and Mitchell opened the Vernal Post Office, resisting the older Ashley Center label amid local sentiment and postal objections. The piece notes William Ashley’s Fur Company link and early settlement around 1879, with two forts and the Meeker incident influencing name choices. Vernal’s naming is framed as a blend of practical appeal and postal decree, securing its place as the town’s title.
