WPA Stewart's Lakes dredge project begins in Jensen

Work on the migratory bird refuge at Brevard Lakes in Jensen started with a large crew and teams building dikes and a canal after a $12,270 WPA labor appropriation was approved. State Fish and Game will spend $9,375, with Crimp supervising, Slaugh as foreman, and plans to expand to about forty men. The project aims to complete nearly three miles of diking and a 1200 foot canal before high water season, using cement, steel, and lumber for gates and protection. The area resembles a fan along Ashley Creek and Green River, with a supply gate to distribute water over the marsh. The work includes an intake on Ashley Creek and an outlet on Green River, and a canal to handle flood water.
