Extension News In Brief
United States imports of cattle and beef declined on a dressed weight basis to 259 million pounds for nine months of 1940, with a 27 percent drop from 1939. Slaughter in the U.S. rose enough to offset import declines, lifting average beef cattle price from 48.6 to 71.5 dollars per 100 pounds. Wheat loans through November 28, 1940 totaled 220,203,020 bushels valued at 187,940,256.09. Farm incomes in western states rose six percent in October and November due to livestock, government payments, and marketing increases. Aerial photo mapping will be used to record acreage and reduce future costs, with farm map tracings prepared in county offices. A new smoked and spiced turkey paste, an American substitute for European imports, has been announced. William Peterson of Utah State Agricultural College Extension Service joins key Land-Grant extension committees. Local holiday events include a Christmastime party by Wild Rose Club and family visits around Christmas in Utah communities.
