Denver Eyes East West Airmail Route Via Uintah Basin

Vernal Lions Club and local business leaders back United Air Lines plan to establish a Denver to Salt Lake City airmail service. Denver Chamber of Commerce and Utah Colorado congressional delegates support the project, noting Denver lacks direct transcontinental airmail. UAL seeks added mileage pay and proposes a route over the Uintah Basin improving Denver access and emergency landing potential. Senator Elbert D. Thomas and Rep. J. W. Robinson pledge active support to the plan.

Uintah Junior Basketball Team Survives Opener

The Uintah high school junior basketball team narrowly defeated Payson 19 to 16 to advance in the fourth annual state junior basketball tournament at Midvale. Freestone led with 9 points while teammates King Sowards Noel Milburn Fox Workman and Anderson contributed in a close opening round game. The Uintah trip was funded by Vertal business men.

Liquor Sales to Students Leads to Fines in Juvenile Court

Rex Taylor 34 driver of La Point Alterra school bus Ray Houston 24 of Whiterocks and Elmer Caldwell 22 of LaPoint were arrested for contributing to delinquency of minors. Taylor pled guilty to furnishing intoxicants to a minor and got a 30 day jail term with sentence suspended. Caldwell was found guilty and fined 50 dollars or 50 days in county jail. Houston and Caldwell faced charges of selling intoxicants to minors but were dismissed for lack of evidence. Trials to be heard again before Judge Sparks.

Funeral Rites for Pioneer of 1883 Held Tuesday

Funeral services in Naples honored Lulla Elizabeth Hullinger Gardiner known as Libby. She died after a long illness and was buried at Vernal Memorial Park. The service featured Bishop LaVell Manwaring and speakers Lewis Gardiner H. Walter Woolley and Byrd Goodrich with music by a mixed quartet and baritone solo. She was born Oct 1873 in Salt Lake County and married twice producing many descendants including 25 grandchildren.

Junior C of C to Sponsor Amateur Boxing Contests

Nethelsel, boxing committee chair, announces first annual amateur boxing meet by the Junior Chamber of Commerce to be held March 11 and 15 at the UHS gym. Elimination March 11, finals March 15. Eastern Utah boxers may enter by March 5 via Clair Fletcher. Top boxers may advance to the AAU meet in Salt Lake City on March 22. Winners receive awards from the Verna Chamber.

Vernal Attorney Chosen Head Of Gun Club

Vernal attorney Jingh W. Colton was chosen president of the Vernal Gun Club at the annual election in the Uinted State Bank directors room. Henry Schaefermeyer became vice president, W. B. Wallis secretary treasurer, Lea Sowards Clark B. Newell and Dr. Wallace B. Calder directors. The club donated $20 to the state time department to aid feeding quail and pheasants through winter. Plans discussed included Leola Bottoms improvement on Green River, a fish hatchery on Brush or Ashley Creek headwaters, and a membership dance soon. Retiring officers were J. O. Stewart president, Mr. Colton vice president, R. Henderson secretary treasurer, Dr. Wallace Calder, Allen Hatch, and Mr. Newell as directors.

Lions Urge Rock Asphalt For US 40 Route Across Uintah

Vernal Lions Club adopts a resolution backing a state wide Lions effort to pave US 40 from Vernal to the Colorado line with asphalt at a cost of about one half to three quarters of a million dollars over two to three years. Letters from leaders urge legislature and governor support while noting WPA project declines. Mayor Cooper warns asphalt action key to employment and local recovery. plan proposes paving Vernal to Jensen this year with dust coat elsewhere and full asphalt finish later. Funeral for Mrs Sarah Richardson in Vernal Ward

The funeral for Mrs. Sarah Richardson wife of Archie S. Richardson was held Sunday at 1 p m in the Vernal First Ward chapel with Bishop Poutha Calder presiding. She died February 17 after heart complications at age 87. Burial was in Heber City cemetery. Survivors include her husband a daughter and five grandchildren with numerous Horrocks siblings among the pallbearers.

Five Criminal Cases to Be Heard in Next Term Of District Court Here

Five criminal cases are set for the spring term of the district court with jury trials to begin March 2 after the court convenes March 1. The docket lists Manford Campbell for non support, S R Bennion and Kenneth Dennison for larceny of sheep, Alfred Kidd for burglary, Royal Aljen for burglary, and John Abptanalp for forgery.

Veterans exemptions urged for county veterans and widows

County Clerk F. and Noel urges war veterans and all widows to file their exemption abatements with him soon, before May 1, to secure eligibility. The notice stresses timely claims and directs veterans and widows to act promptly.

Jensen Water Users Back Buck Pasture Cooperation Plan

A Brush Creek water users and Ashbey Reservoir company meeting produced a cooperative plan to secure water storage and protect irrigation supplies. Attendees included Dr. A. G. Boyle, Ford Degjour nette, J. S. Dudley, W. F. Dillings, Sid Morrison, and others. The group aims to store flood waters to safeguard Jensen and Brush Creek water users and prevent loss to California or Mexico. Dudley and Morrison were chosen to represent the Brush Creek users at a meeting in Jensen to send committeemen to Salt Lake City to meet engineers and officials.
