Woolgrowers Convention Set for Saturday in Ashley Valley

The Ashley Woolgrowers association schedules its annual convention at the Field House with sessions at 9 30 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. President Rulon S. Hacking announces speakers Don C. Clyde and James O. Hooper will participate. Officers will be elected in the afternoon. The event highlights Ashley Valleys pioneer shoe and wool industry and local growth tied to this basin industry.

Oil News Update on Carter's No 2 Ute Well Drilling

Work began Tuesday to build a road to Carter's No 2 Ute Tribal well with drilling to follow. The No 1 Gusher by a California company latest reports at 7400 feet. the No 2 well may reach producing sands at similar depth, with 68 barrels per day on a 24 hour test and various pressures noted.

Utah alumni plan a Founder's Day banquet February 27 at 7 30 p m in Vernal Hotel. The event honors the university as it nears its centennial with guest speaker Dr Dreomer of the medical school. Fossil Fund Drive Sees Community Support Grows

Community response boosts the Fossil Fund Drive organized by the Lions Club with donations from the Senior Current Topics club and the Progressive Arts ladies. A chicken pit sale at O P Skaggs raised funds while the Krissman Orchestra aided the drive. An upcoming play review tea at Hotel Vernal on March 1 and a March 7 basketball event featuring the Negro Ghosts are scheduled to bolster contributions.

LDS Scout Program Opens for 11 Year Olds

The LDS Church plans to allow 11 year old boys to join Candidate Scout ranks within the Boy Scout program. The change, approved by the First Presidency, will take effect after Salt Lake City council approval and ward level scheduling. Training will be led by assistant scoutmasters with older scouts, and duties include memorizing the Scout Law and wearing the uniform. Vernal Ski Lift Draws Winter Sports Fans

Vernal's sole ski lift attracts about 200 enthusiasts with occasional 45-carload runs. Clade Banks, the lift operator, envisions expanding the site into a canyon to enlarge courses while Parks Service cooperation remains strong. The lift, two miles west of Dinosaur Quay near Binsaais National Monument, operates weekends and on special days, drawing beginners to intermediate skiers as snow holds into March.

Willis Southam Returns From Hawaiian Mission

Willis Southam, son of Mr and Mrs George Southam, has returned to Vernal on February 9 after completing a two year LDS mission in the Hawaiian Islands. He served in Hilo, Mountain View, Waipahu, Oahu, and at Mission headquarters in Honolulu. Last Christmas he helped present a Japanese pageant for the benefit of Japanese LDS members and island investigators. He traveled home aboard the S S Louisell and was greeted in Salt Lake City by his mother and other family members.

Uintah High School Band to Perform Concert March 1

A Uintah High School Band concert is set for March 1 with six junior high numbers, four pieces by the girls choir, and performances by 48 voices. Leland Smith will be featured as clarinet soloist in Weber's Concertino as the program aims for a stronger showing than in December.
