Uintah County reports a record Polio drive total of 1292 plus gifts from schools and organizations. Central School led with 116 41 including Mrs Clay Burk personal gift. Uintah High School followed with 6593. Jaycees donated 376 for Emerson Hot Pack apparatus. Vogue and Main Theaters netted 225 33. Indian School Whiterocks contributed 30 40. Vernalite Lights Up National Ski Meet in Steamboat
Claudius Banks starred at the national ski tournament in Steamboat Springs Colorado last weekend wearing an electric suit with six dozen lights on skis and poles. He skied down Route County's highest slopes after a lengthy winter schedule and had attended nearly fifty meets this season. Bob Preae accompanied Claudius on the trip.

Uncle Dick Jensen Celebrates 76th Birthday
Vernal resident Richard Uncle Dick Jensen turned 76 last Tuesday. A former rural mail carrier for 25 years he logged about 262 500 miles on roads and retired February 28 1931. Since 1941 he has served Vernal as justice of the peace. He learned leatherwork at 18 and later ran his own saddle and harness business earning local renown.

Improved Highway to Green River Links Regions Under 100 Miles

Funeral Held Wednesday for Watts Thompson
Watts L. Thompson aged 78 died Sunday morning at 11 25 at his home on Second South after a heart attack. The funeral was held Wednesday at 2 pm at the First Ward with the ward bishopric in charge. He was born October 23 1869 in Kanosh Utah, later ranching in Willow Creek Tiintah Basin before moving to Vernal and then Wyoming and Oregon. Survivors include his widow four stepdaughters Martha Meeks Mountain View Wyoming Josephine Swenson Vernal Alice Save Rawlins Wyoming Rachel Ehlin Laramie Wyoming and three stepsons Sam Powers Las Vegas Nevada Jean Powers Pinedale Wyoming and George Powers Harney Oregon two brothers Joe Vernal and Morris Salt Lake City.
