Jury Finds Hunter's Death Accidental

A three man coroner jury ruled Gere Dean Timothy 16 and Bo Wanza died from accidental gunshot wounds after a hunting incident near Vernal. Timothys funeral was held at Uintah Stake Center with burial at Vernal Memorial Park Cemetery. Victims included Bonanza youth and two Vernal residents. Funeral speakers included local bishops and the family attended with Bonanza High School students.

Water Outlook Good From Paradise and Mosby

Annual snow survey for February at Paradise Park and Mosby Mountain was conducted for the Soil Conservation Service by Gregory Pearson and Leonard Horrocks. The Paradise Park snow measured 38 inches with 9.5 inches water, Mosby Mountain 32 inches with 6? inches water, and both were more compact than usual. Surveys will continue in March April and May at Paradise Park Mosby Mountain and Kings Cabin.

Isobel Batty Heads 1954 Heart Drive

Isobel Batty appointed chairman of the 1954 Heart Fund Drive in Vernal by W. Hugh Brockbank Utah state chairman. She named Helen Wahlquist and Blaine Richardson to her committee. The drive runs through February, sponsored by the Utah Heart Association, with a $30,000 goal. Funds support local programs and national American Heart Association research and education.

Milt Searle Heads Verna Hoping Roping Club

Members elected Milton Searle as president with Lynn McCarrell as vice president and Ralph Walker as secretary. A barbecued supper at the Community Howe followed, and the Vernal Amateur Rodeo was set for July 16 and 17 as a night show. Outgoing officers were Max B. Rasmussen president, Walt Bowden vice president, and Wayne Wilkins secretary.

Funeral Held in Salt Lake City for Flora Callett

Funeral rites were held Monday at 12 pm in Salt Lake City for Mrs. Flora Callett of 142 Hollywood Ave. She died Thursday morning of old age at her daughter Marie Wheeler’s home in San Francisco. The Edgehill ward chapel hosted the service as seven children joined in mourning. A grandson gave the prayer, and several speakers offered reflections on her years in Floraday ward.

Armory Bid Opens in Vernal as Guard Board Reviews

Sealed bids for the Utah National Guard Armory at Vernal were opened by the State Building Board. Sixteen firms bid. the low bid of 68984 from Ralph E. Child of Springville. The National Guard Bureau must approve before work proceeds. The brick and concrete facility would include offices, storage, boiler room, kitchen, showers, rifle range, classrooms, and a 50 by 90 foot assembly hall.

Acid stimulation lifts Utah Basin well performance

H W McCormick, Carter Oil Co supervisor, reports oil well stimulation with hydrochloric and sulfuric acids increased output. The Jim Smith well rose from historical lows to about 100 bbl daily after treatment of two producing zones, with 34 days yielding 1484 bbl plus 47 bbl from the upper zone. A separate Roose-Salette well underwent jet perforation and a 37,000 gallon mud and acid treatment. Public notice follows.

Brennan Bottoms No. 1 Wildcat Put To Test At Brennan

Gulf Oil Corp announced Brennan Federal No 1 wildcat near Brennan Bottoms in Uintah County was tested at 162 barrels per day of 3 degree gravity oil during 24 hours on January 23 after earlier tests on January 21 and 22 showed low or no production. Officials indicated the well may yield four to five times the 162 barrels daily depending on bottom hole pressure readings and future testing. Market/storage delays paused operations from January 24 until 12:30 am Thursday.
