Citizens and officials weighed in on a proposed midnight curfew for minors after the Vernal City Council delayed action. The ordinance would bar those under eighteen from remaining on city streets after midnight unless with a parent or guardian. Police, juvenile authorities, and residents sought diverse views before another council meeting to vote.
C Haws 36 of Frova was appointed principal of Ashley Valley Junior High by the Uintah Base District Board of Education after a special interview. He has taught at Dixon Junior High in Provo for six years and is currently a social science teacher there. Previously he spent nine years in Cedar City and holds a master's in educational administration. He has elementary, junior, and senior high experience totaling 15 years, was born in Escalante, Utah, and is married with four children. He will remain in Provo until term end and then join the Uintah district to prepare for the junior high operation when Uintah High opens. He also serves as president of the Vocal Teachers Association in Provo and has led Utah Education Association secondary teachers and the social science section.
Uintah County hosts Jaycee Junior Basketball for all fifth and sixth grade boys this Saturday at Uintah School. Sponsored by the Vernal Chamber of Commerce the program aims to teach basic fundamentals with Grant Moser as first guest instructor and a rotation of high school coaches guiding stations. Bring a towel for shower facilities and gym gear. session begins at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Uintah School District Board will meet Tuesday at 9:00 AM to review high school progress, attendance request considerations, testing and guidance staffing needs, canvass bids for three new school buses, and discuss high school development equipment.
Claudius Banks, famed as the "lighted man," will perform a ten minute ski descent at Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival featuring 350 feet of wire and Roman candy effects. The show starts Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Steamboat area near Vernal and Manila roads, with hundreds of lights and a planned 600 foot ski drop, drawing guests from the region.
Bids opened on two Uintah County state road projects this week. W W Clyde and Co of Springville submitted the low bid of 341 446 for US 40 projects, below an engineer estimate of 402 016 80. Oldt Nelson Construction Co of Logan bid 226 840 for the Tridel east three miles and then south five miles to Lapoint and one mile toward Whiterocks project, under an engineer estimate of 245 041. Work will start after weather permits.
Snow surveys by Leon Horrocks and Gilbert Horrocks of the Soil Conservation Service and Ashley National Forest Service report light fluffy snow on Paradise Park and Mosby Mountain. February 1955 totals compare with February 1954, with six year water-content averages around 0.8 to 6.2 inches. Snow depths range 27 to 32 inches, elevations noted, and further surveys planned for March through May.
Clarence White seeks a license or franchise to provide television service in Vernal City by co axel cable from Tabiona. He plans to wire Roosevelt City next and have service in Vernal within three months if granted. Cost per home includes approximately 220 for hookup and 4.95 monthly for maintenance and service.
A Colorado River Week observation from February 15 to 19 urges unity across Utah Colorado Wyoming and New Mexico to support the Colorado River Storage Project. Upper Colorado River Grass Roots Committee promotes a door to door canvass with $1 donations, badges, and certificates for Aqualantes while urging letters to officials and business outreach via chambers of commerce. Governor Bracken Lee proclaims the event and state leaders including Hugh W. Colton and George D. Odes lead Utah efforts from the State Capitol.
Glines Naples and Davis leaders held a mass meeting in Glines Ward Chapel to study a culinary water system for their communities possibly including Maeser and Ashley. A six member committee was formed to study the project and report back at a later general meeting.
Tonight at Union gym the Division 14 subdivision B finals are set with Maeser and Naples junior squads at 7 30 p m and Vernal Ard versus Roosevelt 2nd men at 9 00 p m to decide advancement. Earlier results saw Naples top Roosevelt 4th in juniors as Vern 4 3rd ward beat Pareles Reads.
Nation’s 3 680 000 Cub Scots Boy Scouts Explorers and adult leaders will observe the 45th anniversary at the celebration week May 13 theme “Building for a Better Tomorrow”. Observance in Uintah District will include window displays in business houses and a Scout Circus next Thursday Scout Sunday February 6 with three radio programs on station KJAM.
Rep. Azpinesis and Rep. Dawson with Rep. Fernandez back bills to fund up to 32 irrigation storage projects along the Upper Colorado, aiming at six reservoirs including Glen Canyon and Mountain Dam efforts. Aspinall’s measure adds a new cost repayment formula and pledges state programs for upstream reservoirs to enable beneficial consumptive use, aligning with river commission proposals.
Officials of the Utah National Guard and State Building Hoard inspected the Vernal armory last week and gave final approval. The 1334th Engineer Battalion began drills as equipment moved from the old building to the new quarters. Col. Joe Whitesides represented the U.S. government during the inspection. Contractor Ralph Child addresses minor reservations being completed. An open house is planned and a March military hall will be held in the new building at Second South and Fifth East with landscaping slated for next summer. The facility includes classrooms, locker rooms, kitchen, recreation and storage rooms, a library and office, a vehicle garage, and a large drill hall with potential for community functions and an indoor shooting range for the Vernal Red Gun Club.
Duff Swain a Vernal building contractor was elected president of the Vernal Rod and Gun Club at Monday’s meeting. Bob Morrison, a local barber, was named vice president with three new directors including Swain, Me, and Dale Jensen. The club noted Stewart’s Lake project and plans for bass hatchery work and quail introductions, plus trout plantings and an aerial count of wildlife.
The Vernal Amateur Rodeo dates were moved to June 24 and 25 due to avoiding conflict with the professional rodeo now set for August. Uintah Woolgrowers hold annual meeting at Hotel Vernal February 24 with elections. officers include Roy Sho Showalter president Horwei Williams vice president Kennath Stringham secretary.
In Pebrey 7 1938 the county observes Dental Health Week with dentists and county nurses promoting ill health prevention. Dr Dan Q Priest and John Shimmin Vernal dentists prepared a six article series on dental care and heart health, aiming to educate residents through county channels.
