County Boys Tractor to Build Roads

The county bought a Caterpillar tractor and hydraulic grader from International Harvester to rebuild main roads and hillside routes. The outfit, costing about 10 000 dollars, is intended for WPA projects and routine county road work. A meeting with commissioners and Superintendent C Wright is set for Friday at 10 pm at the courthouse.

Boy Scout Week Observances Highlight Local Events

Feb 5 to 12 marks Boy Scout Week with a Vernal Lions Club commemoration and a Fathers and Sons banquet at the high school. Lions members urged to bring sons. Each troop will present a 30 minute program followed by recommittal exercises. All Scouts expected to attend the entertainment program at the school.

Recommendations covered farm use of native timber, cooperative buying, dairy quality, dual purpose poultry stock, and rural water conditions. Mrs Hadlock Funeral Held Sunday in Vernal

Mrs Ecurt Is Hadlock 78 died Thursday at her Vernal home. Funeral services led by ward bishopric included prayers by Chas H Colton and J im Workman. Interment at Vernal Memorial Park with pallbearers Austin Haws and Varl Haws among grandchildren.

Public Domain Stockmen Plan to Unite in Utah

Assembly of more than 100 Utah stockmen proposed a new group named the Utah Livestock Graziers Association to represent cattle horses sheep and goats grazing on public domain lands. The plan aims for fair fast management of federal state and county lands and to defend private stock producers rights. A February meeting will consider bylaws and an officer election.

Advisory Board to Pass On Grazing Applications Wednesday

The Advisory Board of Utah Grazing District No 8 will meet in Vernal on Wednesday to act on grazing applications for the 1939 49 season. The session will be presided by H. E. Seeley, chairman, and decisions will follow district grazing rules.

Ray Richens dies after illness in Vernal Utah

Ray Richens died of a heart attack early Thursday after about ten days of illness. Born November 27 1887 in Vernal to Abner and Fannie Richens he married Pearl Nielsen in December 1910. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 0 in the Gillies ward chapel with Bishop John B Raton directing. Survived by wife Pearl Richens six children Blanche Hatch Charles Clyde Claude Vinlet and Carl Richens all of Vernal, his father Abner Richens and mother, four sisters C M Iverson Chase Batty Mrs Robert Hunting Mrs Goldie Lind, three brothers Lynn John and George Richens, and five grandchildren.

Captain Sowards led with 13 points and Walker added 12 as Uintah dominated, while Roosevelt managed just a three point burst in the second half. The junior Rough Riders fell behind early. the Uintah second team beat Roosevelt 33 to 24 in the preliminary.

Wong Sing Mercantile Moves to New U S 40 Location

The Wong Sing Mercantile plans relocation from its Fort Duchesne site to a newly finished store on US 40 near the Uintah River. Manager Wong Ching announces a full stock of dry goods groceries meat furniture and clothing. A removal sale at the old store runs for one week. The modern two story building features large show windows and dedicated grocery meat and furniture sections with a pharmacy and office space planned.

Road Crusher Setup Near Lapoint Advances Projects

The state road commission will move a crusher to Dead Mule Wash three miles east of Lapoint to produce surfacing material for the Vernal Lapoint road. About fifty men will be employed as work begins after ground frost ends, with two locations planned and material hauled by local trucks within 28 miles. A new Fort Duchesne Ouray road includes a 310,000 bridge over Dry Gulch and will reshape the Uintah River route to serve more people, while the old fort bridge remains closed.

Red Cross First Aid Classes Begin Next Monday

Under the direction of J W Stevens a class in First Aid began December 6 and will finish January 17 with 31 graduates. The Vernal camp hosted sessions each Monday and Thursday with 82 members enrolled. This report lists the first group certified and notes another class starts February 6 at 7:00 pm at the Community House with instructors including Dr J W Stevens and nurses Jane Loftis Clark and Naomi Zundell among others.
