The Utah Wildlife Federation plans a nationwide information effort to counter opposition to the Upper Colorado River Storage Project dam at Echo Park. Tridell fire destroys milk barn and cow shed

A fire last Wednesday at the Parney Goodrich farm in Tridell destroyed a milk barn and cow shed. Bad wiring was blamed. Vernal’s Volunteer Fire Department arrived too late to save the buildings. Estimated loss around 2500 dollars. nearby structures stayed safe.

Community Birthday Calendars Distributed by Vernal Seminary

About 500 community birthday calendars were distributed by Vernal Seminary. The calendars list birthdays and anniversaries of participants and encourage calling friends to wish them well. The Uintah High School basketball schedule is included and extras may be obtained by calling Frank Walker. Those who ordered calendars but have not received them should contact Mr. Walker or Louis Fife. A follow on project is planned for next year. Legislative meeting set for January 5 to hear community problems.

Former Resident Lily Ann Boan Dies in Colorado

Lily Ann Boan 88, longtime Vernal resident, died Sunday at St Mary's Hospital Grand Junction Colorado. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Kingsbury Congregational Church Vernal. Born December 10 1866 in Council Bluffs Iowa she married Wilson Bryan Boan in 1888 and lived in Vernal until 1941. Surviving children include Joe Hoan Clarence Boan Rebecca Mellors Thor Ferguson.

Building boom in Vernal City hits near million dollar value in 1954

Vernal Jensen U.S. 40 Project Gets Federal Aid Funds

The Utah State Road Commission approves an $11.166 million federal aid program for fiscal 1955 66 allocating $780 000 to thirteen miles of U S Highway 40 from Vernal to Jensen and $1 418 000 to 3 4 miles of U S Highway 10 widening in Parleys Canyon. Other work includes $600 000 for 32 foot widening on U S 40 west of Salt Lake from Mills Junction to Tooele County and $385 000 for Duchesne County secondary road upgrades. Total planned highway work covers 197 miles with widening realignment and staking in multiple counties.

Police Officer Family Located After Spending Nite in Canyon

Police and local agencies recovered officer Harold Alexander and his family after spending the night near Vernal Canyon. A missing family from Vernal City, relatives, and neighbors prompted a multi‑agency search across Taylor Mountain Red Cloud area and surrounding roads. No further injuries reported while the causes and conditions of the holiday incidents remain under investigation.

Continental Oil Finds More Gas at Chapita Wells

Continental Oil announced two additional natural gas producing zones in the Chapita Wells wildcat in Uintah County. Each test yielded several million cubic feet. one four hour test reported 8 165 to 8 220 feet producing 78 000 cubic feet and a 3 hour test between 8 301 and 8 339 feet produced between 1 and 2 million cubic feet daily. Gas volume diminished after tests. low pour point dark brown oil was recovered in the seat between 8 165 and 6 220 feet. Commissioners Curtis Dudley Jensen and Orville Swain Lapoint were flown home from EDS Hospital in Logan after injuries in a two car head on collision December 16 on Highway 91 south of Logan. Swain drove a 1954 Pontiac. Jensen faces a drunk driving charge after recovery. Dudley sustained brain concussion facial lacerations shock a fractured right hip and broken ribs. Swain suffered shock rib and chest injuries. The other driver sustained multiple fractures and cuts.

Midnight Breakfast After Uintah Stake Center Dance

A midnight breakfast will follow the stake dance at Uintah Stake Center on New Year’s Eve.
