100 Baskets Distributed To the Needy Christmas Effort
The Community Christmas Committees distributed over 100 baskets of goodies and other presents to about 200 needy residents on Christmas Eve. The Vernal Lions Club led the effort with W. Henderson, aided by American Legion, Legion Auxiliary, Scout groups, and the Ladies. Items were prepared days earlier at Uintah Gas, with baskets packed and distributed by a fleet of trucks on Christmas Eve.

Quarantine for spinal meningitis at the Vernal CCC camp and Campbell hospital was lifted on Monday. One case was contracted and the patient has fully recovered. The camp physician and officers, along with local medical and civic authorities, aided in stamping out the disease.

Pioneers Stephen Montgomery Ross Born in Utah War Era
Stephen Montgomery Ross son of Stephen Weeks Ross Jr and Geneva Ellen Molen was born July 18 1870 at Leni Utah. His grandfather Stephen Weeks Ross Sr died in Nauvoo and was among early Mormon martyrs. The family moved from Round Valley to Lake Canyon Provo area with bear hunts and cattle trading memories. Stephen grew up poor in Uintah Basin enduring a harsh 1887 move amid severe snow while pursuing schooling and reading to his wife. Continued on page eight.

Tubular Fire Escape Installed at Central School
A tubular fire escape is being installed this week on the south side of Central School, described as the most modern design to minimize injury. With proper drills, the upper floor could be cleared in three minutes, and students reaching the ground are urged to run promptly to clear the exit path.
