Electric Siren Tests Fire Alarms In Vernal

In Vernal the city tests a new electric fire alarm placed atop the Co op building and operated from the telephone exchange. Mayor Walter G Barnes said Wednesday’s test would be the final drill and a sounding later would indicate a fire. A meeting of the new fire department was called for Thursday night.

Alfalfa Seed Growers Hold Saturday Meeting in Ashley Valley

Nearly thirty farmers and several businessmen met at the Commercial club rooms to discuss the alfalfa seed situation in Ashley valley and the potential Bead plant in Vernal. J G Peppard seed company was not represented. Nelson of Western Seed Growers Marketing attended and offered to build a cleaning plant under a 3000 acre contract, but advised delaying action due to late season marketing. The group adjourned to a date after the holidays.

Boys and Girls Club Plans for Coming Year

Vernal area clubs announce rewards and projects for the next year. The United State Bank offers two purebred calves to the top club and a purebred pig to the best large club, plus a savings deposit of 1.03 for every participant who completes a project. Dairy calves include Holstein and Jersey, poultry focuses on turkeys, with garden, corn and beet projects and cooking sewing and canning. Girls may enter any project and encampment at county fair is planned for completers.

Tractors Keep Road Open For Mail Trucks

Unusually early snow storms delayed mail service but with two caterpillar tractors on Oil Creek road the route remained passable. Frak Davis the government mail foreman led efforts that allowed cars and parcel post to travel as tractors pulled seven trucks over the summit.

Dr Earl Douglass to Lecture Sunday at Vogue Theatre

Dr Earl Douglass famed geologist of Jencen Utah will give the first lecture Sunday afternoon at 4 oclock in the Vogue theatre. The event opens a lecture series with 8 to 10 talks planned. A full program includes community singing under Prof William F Hanson a whistling solo by Miss Ettoyn Ashton and a vocal solo by Miss Clola Young. The topic is Beginning in History. Lectures are free and a crowded house is anticipated.

State bounty fund opens for predatory animals payout

County officials announced a $15,000 bounty program from the state fund to pay trappers for coyotes and bobcats, with a ten day to two week window and strict rule against paying for pelts older than sixty days. Local clerks reported initial payments totaling 60 animals and 348 inbounties as trappers expected more deliveries this week.

Dr Harvey Hullinger Celebrates 98th Birthday in Utah

On December 2, Dr Harvey Coe Hullinger celebrated his 98th birthday in Salt Lake City. He is the oldest Civil War veteran in Utah and member of the O Q Howard Post. He spoke at a quarterly conference recounting early Mormon church history and battles, noting his keen mind and interest in radio. He served as a soldier in Wyoming and Utah guarding the pony express from Indian depredations.

Shipment of 300 Hogs Start for Watson

E D Smith president of Uintah county farm bureau led a trio of drivers and two wagons with supplies to move 300 hogs gathered from valley points to Watson. The herd will be loaded for shipment to McFarlane and Son in Salt Lake City and arrival is expected Monday evening or near noon with immediate loading.

Water Application Seeks 100 Second Feet for Uintah County Lands

An application filed with the state engineer seeks to divert 100 second feet of water from the Ashley Fork in Uintah county for about 3000 acres of land. The plan would convey water roughly three miles southeast of Vernal and through 14 miles of open tanks to lands along the Green river in Uintah county.
