In Vernal the city tests a new electric fire alarm placed atop the Co op building and operated from the telephone exchange. Mayor Walter G Barnes said Wednesday’s test would be the final drill and a sounding later would indicate a fire. A meeting of the new fire department was called for Thursday night.
Nearly thirty farmers and several businessmen met at the Commercial club rooms to discuss the alfalfa seed situation in Ashley valley and the potential Bead plant in Vernal. J G Peppard seed company was not represented. Nelson of Western Seed Growers Marketing attended and offered to build a cleaning plant under a 3000 acre contract, but advised delaying action due to late season marketing. The group adjourned to a date after the holidays.
Vernal area clubs announce rewards and projects for the next year. The United State Bank offers two purebred calves to the top club and a purebred pig to the best large club, plus a savings deposit of 1.03 for every participant who completes a project. Dairy calves include Holstein and Jersey, poultry focuses on turkeys, with garden, corn and beet projects and cooking sewing and canning. Girls may enter any project and encampment at county fair is planned for completers.
Unusually early snow storms delayed mail service but with two caterpillar tractors on Oil Creek road the route remained passable. Frak Davis the government mail foreman led efforts that allowed cars and parcel post to travel as tractors pulled seven trucks over the summit.
Dr Earl Douglass famed geologist of Jencen Utah will give the first lecture Sunday afternoon at 4 oclock in the Vogue theatre. The event opens a lecture series with 8 to 10 talks planned. A full program includes community singing under Prof William F Hanson a whistling solo by Miss Ettoyn Ashton and a vocal solo by Miss Clola Young. The topic is Beginning in History. Lectures are free and a crowded house is anticipated.
County officials announced a $15,000 bounty program from the state fund to pay trappers for coyotes and bobcats, with a ten day to two week window and strict rule against paying for pelts older than sixty days. Local clerks reported initial payments totaling 60 animals and 348 inbounties as trappers expected more deliveries this week.
Readable notice outlines a special Christmas program at several churches this weekend. A Christmastree will be in the Kingsbury Congregational Church on Monday evening. Pastor Paul W. Shankwaller is set to preach Friday at 1 a m. A special Christmas program will be held.
The Vernal First Ward schedules a Sunday school program at 10:30 a.m. with Prelude, orchestra, songs and readings led by Bishop H. B. St Paul Episcopal will host a Christmas tree and exercises at the lodge Saturday afternoon. Regular Sunday school will be held, followed by services at the church on Sunday.
Christmas day services at 7 oclock in the Vernal Commercial Club hall with a sermon by Father D G Hugi. The public is welcome to attend the Catholic Church observance.
Christian Science readers will attend a service at 11 am with Christian Leeson leading the reading. No other services are scheduled.
Mayor Walter G. Barnes presided over the first council meeting. Councilmen Davis Henderson Sowers Prea and Dowroy attended. Only routine matters were discussed and the siren was approved. The January meeting will tackle fire protection for Vermal.
A baby boy arrived Friday morning to Mr and Mrs Chas T Popa of Mr Dall, bringing joy to their home.
Postmaster E J Young Jr and staff will keep the parcel post window open on Sunday to meet public demand. The move aims to provide efficient service and ensure Christmas parcels arrive before the holiday, avoiding delivery the day after Christmas.
Former Vernal mayor Dr George H. Cruikshank departed Tuesday morning for San Diego to begin at least four months of postgraduate study in several coast hospitals.
Uintah County Farm Bureau ships two carloads of Idaho turkeys to Omaha for Christmas trade. Turkeys sourced from Price and Ashley Valley areas with routes via Moffat, Tr dey and Wilson. Eastern and western markets receive Uintah Basin turkeys with top prices around 88 and 260 cents per pound for different grades.
On December 2, Dr Harvey Coe Hullinger celebrated his 98th birthday in Salt Lake City. He is the oldest Civil War veteran in Utah and member of the O Q Howard Post. He spoke at a quarterly conference recounting early Mormon church history and battles, noting his keen mind and interest in radio. He served as a soldier in Wyoming and Utah guarding the pony express from Indian depredations.
The tracks are pulled from the station on this side over the mountain top due to a cut road. Trains can access the top from the opposite side. A heavy Christmas parcel is arriving for Basin towns, reaching the area quickly.
Maeser School leads county reports with eight health bonds in Ashley valley. Principal N O G Larson notes Eiglauth and Ninth grades bought bonds at thirty cents per pupil, likely exceeding the allotment. Bennett and Fort Lincoln report stamp orders rising as stores sell more stamps. Next week a detailed status on workers results and school reports is expected.
E D Smith president of Uintah county farm bureau led a trio of drivers and two wagons with supplies to move 300 hogs gathered from valley points to Watson. The herd will be loaded for shipment to McFarlane and Son in Salt Lake City and arrival is expected Monday evening or near noon with immediate loading.
Vernal ward held M I A conference Sunday with the First ward Scout work directed by Stake Scoutmaster Jesse Haw way. Speakers included Prof B A Jacob gem and J W Christiansen. The Second ward featured The Spirit of the Hive pageant and Bee Hive award noted by Mrs Pontha Calder.
Robbery reported at the Roosevelt post office late Saturday night. Entry through the back door. small amount of stamps and mail, a revolver, and a cabinet pried open. Suspects believed to be amateurs based on initial reports.
An application filed with the state engineer seeks to divert 100 second feet of water from the Ashley Fork in Uintah county for about 3000 acres of land. The plan would convey water roughly three miles southeast of Vernal and through 14 miles of open tanks to lands along the Green river in Uintah county.
Uintah county records show a total near six thousand dollars paid in taxes this year with the 3 percent penalty included. County Treasurer W. B. Henderson reports higher receipts than in 1921 as taxes were collected after ads closed for the sale.
