York Authority Plans 140 Aircraft Terminal City Heating Network
The project runs a 734 mile piping system from a Central Heating Plant through sandy soil under roads and runways to 655 acres of proposed buildings. Partial operation is to start by June 1957 with Terminal City completed in 1960 to handle 140 aircraft at once. The system includes 53 expansion loops totaling over a mile of pipe and will carry water at 380 degrees F to return at 240 degrees F. High temperature hot water systems gain attention for efficiency.

Gilsulate insulation used for underground pipe protection
A trench was filled with concrete slabs to confine heating pipes and Gilsulate insulation poured around them. The material, a granulated Gilsonite product from Utah, fuses to the pipe as steam turns on, creating a protective ceramic-like barrier against underground corrosion. Prior idlewild installations reportedly performed well under similar moisture and terrain challenges.
