Jaycees prize home decorations amid Christmas displays

A Jaycees contest awarded 25 dollars for best decorated home and 10 dollars for the best religious theme. Dr and Mrs T Z Seager at 62 No 2nd West won the overall prize with a star on the roof Santa and sleigh on the chimney and evergreen windows. The Oaks at 331 East 2nd So earned the religious prize with pine boughs and lights.

Vernal Businesses Seek Federal Procurement Aid

Vernal firms seek federal procurement aid as SBA and Utah officials disclose registration growth. In Utah the number of small firms registered with the Denver regional SBA office rose to 452 in 58 cities, from 231 in December 1954, aided by a cooperation program with the Department of Employment Security.

Doctor H B Fowler awarded three year medical grant

Dr Herbert Fowler, Vernal physician, was awarded a three year grant by the University of Utah Medical School Department of Psychiatry with Neurology. The award makes him co ordinator of Utah Mental Health and initiates the Intermountain west’s first such university grant. He will begin after the year starts and return to practice later, with plans to move his family to Salt Lake City.

Father of teen killed in Duchesne blast sues Ute Tribe

W. L. Robbins, father of Vernon Robbins, files 300000 damages in U S District Court Salt Lake City alleging the Uintah and Ouray Ute Tribe caused an explosion in an abandoned cabin near Duchesne August 30, 1954. The tribe named as defendant with government initially listed. case notes say Duchesne County site on tribal property. A brother and another man were injured in the blast while boys fired sites into junk can piles.

Loan Approved For $100,000 Project At Cliff Whiterocks Lake

At a Vernal Chamber of Commerce meeting, Hugh W. Collop reported Utah Water and Power Board approved a loan for a water project at Cliff Whiterocks Lake to benefit Ouray Valley. The Joan will cover 78 percent of the $100,000 cost, delivering 2,000 acre feet of water at $60 per acre foot. The meeting highlighted Christmas candy distributions and National Guard outreach plans with fundraisers for Guard activities. Marriage licenses issued include Richart Feterson and Neola fadatepts, and James A Robbins Jr. and Toni Atwood.

Vernal approves 1957 budget at public hearing

Vernal city council approved a 1957 budget of 363 815 dollars with a mill levy held at 10.75. A carryover from 1956 of 197 137.12 reduces new revenue needed to 166 878.75 plus 150 000 dollars in general obligation bonds. Unused sewer carryover funds earmark 134 000 for a new plant and developments. The budget assumes an assessed valuation of 2,793,000.

Flaming Gorge Access Road Project Starts Soon

The Linwood to Dutch John access road and seven miles of Green River lower section reconstruction will begin in coming weeks. Wangsgaard Construction Company of Logan won the bid to build a bridge over the Green River and connect the dam site to Highway 530.43. Contracts for town utilities at Dutch John Flat and related preparations are expected shortly with further road work planned in the near future.

Masonic Services Honor Clyde S. Johnson Saturday

Saturday morning at 11 the Congregations Community House hosted Masonic services for Clyde S. Bug Johnson who died Wednesday night from a sudden heart attack. Ashley Lodge No 28 F&AM conducted the funeral with Bjorn Ryn as Worshipful Master, assisted by Senior Warden Ross Slye, Chaplain Don Geiger, Marshall Larry Phillips and lodge officers.
