Funeral Rites Held for Mrs Pack in Vernal Utah

Funeral services for Mrs Leon Pack were conducted in Vernal with Bishop Calder presiding. Attendants included Mrs Eve Andton and Mrs Margaret Witbeck, with an escort of honor. interment followed at Maeser Cemetery under Swain Funeral Home. Mrs Pack, born November 30 1899 in British Columbia, widow of Leon L Pack coal operator, leaves two children and a former husband, with relatives from Salt Lake City Provo and beyond attending.

Road workers uncover two Indian skeletons near Coca Beach

On a plowing cut near Coca Beach George Caldwell and James Hofeltz unearthed what appears to be two Indian skeletons. The ground showed unusually fast settling, with bones turned up up to four feet deep. Preservation was noted but fractures occurred from the heavy plow. Bones were gathered and taken to local authorities for examination.

One covers Physical Geography and the other General Geology, each worth five college credits. CCC Camp Builds Roads and Hosts Dinosaur Trip

The Vernal CCC camp reports progress on the Jensen Bonanza truck trail project No 3 stretching five miles east of Jensen and extending 32 miles to assist ranchers. Project No 2 is about 45 percent complete with improvements aimed at safer travel. Work on DeVed reservoir project No 8 is advancing with local crews and mules aiding excavation and puddling for future water conservation. On Thanksgiving fifty boys visited the Dinosaur Nations Monument with Dr A Boste explaining fossil formation, accompanied by foreman Carl Masiak and Dr O T Keaveney. County Commissioner Wil L Johnson toured Roosevelt and Uintah Power and Light Company in Uintah canyon.

Caution urged against careless and destructive practices in cutting timber.

Cattle Culling and Bang Disease Test in Utah

Cattle in Alin county undergo Bang disease testing conducted by J M Twitchell and L W Jones veterinary inspectors. Blood samples are sent to the Utah State Laboratory at Logan for agglutination testing to determine infection. Infected herds are slaughtered with compensation of 95 dollars for slaughtered cattle and 60 dollars for registered animals plus salvage. The 35 day processing window covers Dry Park Maeser Ashby and Drain Creek areas, with 2140 head tested and about 12 percent stricken. The program spans Utah and several states, aiming to reduce losses to stockgrowers, with 37,180 cattle tested and 3,444 reactors by November 1, 1955. The annual industry loss is around 629 million, and continued federal funding is sought until Bang disease is eradicated.

James Eskelson Early Brush Creek Rancher Passes

James Eskelson a Brush Creek rancher born April 26 1865 in Samsed Utah died after a heart attack. Funeral services were held at Ashley Ward Chapel with Bishop Alma Preece presiding and interment in Vernal cemetery. Eskelson lived in Ashley Valley since 1685 and was a longtime leader in irrigation projects. He is survived by three brothers and several siblings. many friends attended the service.
