Prisoner Dies From Fire at Vernal Jail

Vernal officials report a prisoner died after a fire in his jail cell late Wednesday. Icared War ren Nurton 20 formerly of Salt Lake City was suffocated during confinement after a disturbance arrest by City Marshal Lafe Richardson. The inquest heard that Nurton was placed in a separate cell with two other inmates, and two burning mattresses were found near the door. Fire and rescue efforts lasted over half an hour but Nurton was pronounced dead at the scene. The escape- or release-attempts by relatives and local officers are noted, with the tragedy unfolding while negotiations for Nurton’s release were underway.

Diphtheria Immunization Campaign Reaches Uintah County Schools

Last week nurses and officials inoculated nearly a thousand school children across Ashley Valley and west Uintah schools. Counts include 43 at Jensen, 103 Naples, 152 Maeser, 275 Vernal Central, 257 Uintah High, and 30 Ballard, 67 Lepopint, 61 Alterm, 74 Tridel, 33 Fort Thichesne, 32 Scots, 8 Dragon on the west side. Prisoners Escape Jail Steal Car Then Flee

Three prisoners escaped from the county jail before 1120 pm Wednesday night, stealing William Collyer s automobile. A federal officer from Salt Lake City recaptured one prisoner, placing him in jail, while the other two, Krajeski and Mrowska, have trials next Wednesday. The trio fled east after taking the 1937 Terraplane.

Bennion Dies at Home in Afton Wyoming at 73

David Bennion 73 formerly of Vernal died at his residence in Afton Wyoming on a Wednesday after months of myocarditis and angina. He was born February 1 1864 near Vernal and lived in Uintah County for over twenty years contributing to business and civic life. He served as Vernal mayor, worked with banks and the Uintah Creamery, and was a retired patriarch in the LDS Church. He is survived by his widow, several children, brothers, and a sister.

Open Air Pavilion Construction Near Imperial Hall Vernal

Work started last week on an outdoor recreational dance pavilion south of Imperial Hall in Vernal. A G Goodrich is in charge, coordinating a make work project linked to the Vernal LDS Seminary. The base lies under a foot of cobbles with sand and gravel spread, settling over winter for a cement floor next spring. Utah Road Cut Threatens Million Loss To State

Congressman J Will Robinson said he will oppose any curtailment of the highway program in committee and on the floor. Utah leaders protested President Roosevelt's plan to reduce 1939 federal aid and cap 1940 allocations at 335 million dollars, warning it would halt new road building and push costs onto counties.

The National Reemployment Service office at Duchesne will close effective December 1 as District Seven merges into the Salt Lake City district under Utah State Employment Service. Red Cross Head Urges Highway First Aid Work

San Francisco reports Amer ican Red Cross head Ali Shafer urges expanded Highway First Aid stations across the Pacific area. Enrollment may reach half a million in Pacific states toward a national five million. Volunteers operate 328 fixed and 113 mobile stations locally, with nationwide totals of 1,990 fixed and 1,175 mobile units.

Ashley to Rebuild Chapel at Cost of $17 000

Ashley ward hosts a community day led by Bishop Alma Preece and Lorene Anderson to raise funds for rebuilding the damaged chapel. A concert, singing, readings, and dances drew about 200 attendees as plans call for a larger recreation hall and more classrooms. Estimated cost runs 17000 to 18000 dollars with spring construction start and winter fundraising events planned.

Uintah County Protests Welfare Aid for Indians in 1938

Uintah county commissioners protest Social Security welfare provisions taxing non taxpaying Indians. They urge reimbursement from the Indian Department and urge Utah’s lawmakers to limit county obligations, citing an estimated 50 Indians seeking aid in 1938 and a 16 percent county levy. The letter includes a non taxable lands table and notes road expansions in 1977-23.

Jensen Murray Farmer Dies in Yard on Wednesday

Jensen Murray, 74, prosperous farmer and stockman of Jensen, was found dead beside the pig pen after feeding stock. Death likely due to a heart attack. Survived by wife Mrs. Murrey and children Andrew, Violet, Roy, and others. Burial plans not yet arranged.
