Highway Patrol announces Safe Driving Day to curb traffic deaths, with a 4 hour daylight and night window. Sgt Sammy Hatch urges careful, safe behavior and promises possible warnings and pamphlets for violators. Traffic patrols intensify until December 11 with a national death tally.
At Dry Fork rancher Dean Sessions suffered a broken leg early last week when a horse he was driving from one corral to another bolted and struck a loose board causing a pole to hit his knee. A doctor set the leg in a full cast and estimated a two week recovery.
The Alaiah Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will host its quarterly conference at the Stake Center Saturday evening starting 6 30 with Elder John Longden visiting from Salt Lake City. A priesthood meeting for male members and their wives follows at 8 p m, with general sessions Sunday at 9 30 a m and 2 p m in the Tabernacle.
Mr and Mrs J A Cheney traveled to Salt Lake City for Thanksgiving. Joining them for dinner were Mrs Cheney's sister Blanche Lewis their daughter Miss Jeanne Cheney and their son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs Lew Cheney both of Salt Lake. Vernal Jaycees lead a service project to equip the new high school nasium with culite glass backboards for basketball season. The Jaycee sports committee organized tournaments to raise funds, starting last August with fat ball matches between the famed teams.
About 250 worshippers joined ministers from Vernal churches in an interdenominational Thanksgiving service at Ashley Valley Junior High School Monom. The Rev James E Aiken urged gratitude for blessings, while Pres Jesse A Haws of the LDS Uintah Stake Presidency cited Abraham Lincoln as a humility example. Attenders donated three bushel baskets of food for Christmas baskets for the needy. Vernal Kiwanis thanked church leaders and participants.

A two car accident at Highway 40 and airport road occurred Tuesday at 12 30 a m involving Jack Thomas Crawford 41 Vernal drunk driver and Celea Simper 20 Vernal telephone operator. The Cranford car a 1643 Hudson sedan attempted a left turn while the Simper car a 1955 Pontiac sedan passed Braking distance was 126 feet and damages listed as 7500 on the Cranford and 10000 on the Simper. Crawford received a citation for improper left turn and Simper for improper passing.
A Utah highway to Dinosaur National Monument would give public access to the heart of the canyon country officials say. The two lane road from Highway 40 to Harpers Corner would spur economic activity and bring thousands more visitors to the area.
Homemakers and 4 H club members will feature demonstrations at a public meeting Friday at 8 p.m. in the courthouse auditorium. County agents report progress on county programs and a special guest Marden Broadbent from the extension service will attend.

In Artesta Colorado Salt Lake City police, with FBI, detained David Arthur Brown 27 Loretta Gilkey 17 and Robert Killough 19 all of Wichita Kansas after a robbery at Claude Hall ranch 15 miles west of Craig. Tracks led to a tire trade at Club 40 Artesa service station. the girl is a runaway and a youth had jumped bond in Wichita for counterfeiting.
Two former Uintah School District superintendents join State Superintendent E Allen Bateman as featured speakers for Uintah High School's dedication program. The ceremony includes music by the school band and orchestra, a color posting, pledge, prayers, and addresses by Dr Noble and Dr West.
A 1953 Chevrolet sedan driven by Carl G. Youngberg, 73, and a two wheel trailer loaded with lumber overturned three miles east of Vernal. The trailer whipped during a curve, sending lumber across the highway and down a bank through a fence. Estimated damages totaled $325 with $300 to the vehicle and $25 to the fence. No citations were issued.
Engineering and design of a 13 million dollar cabbing unit for the American Gilsonite Co. coke-refiner plant at Fruita Colorado was awarded to PetroCarb Corp of New York City. The project includes a gilsonite pipeline from Bonanza Utah and mine improvements with completion targeted for November 1 1956. Gilsonite mining will use water jet pressure and be conveyed by water to the plant.
George D. Clyde reclamation expert and Utah group chairman told Vernal Chamber of Commerce board of directors that prospects for the Colorado River development measure are improving. He outlined that Vernal should become a dispatching center for power projects on the river and noted Eisenhower's continued support. Clyde said the bill’s fate hinges on Congress reconvening and favored amending in committees rather than introducing a new bill. Revenue from power projects would finance construction over more than 25 years and sustain the wider river development, including Glen Canyon and Flaming Gorge projects, with jobs beginning in the East.
