The heavy class saw W W McConkie’s 3287 pound team win with a 2700 pound lead 27 feet 3 inches, while Harvey Glmed Pidell’s team took second with 18 feet 7 inches.

The Mt Dell settlement grew from homesteads to a community with a schoolhouse heated by a fireplace. Early leaders included Mark Hall and Elder Thomas Bingham Sr. The first postmistress was Sally Immer, with mail from Vernal twice weekly. Community groups formed in 1879 and 1888, and the area built roads, a cottonwood water trough, and a nearby mill later known as Flume Mill.

Successfully Navigate Colo River Canyon Trek

The party led by Bus Hatch Frank Swain John Hatch Royce Mowrey and Dr RG Frazier aimed to descend the Green and Colorado rivers from Ouray Utah to Lees Ferry Arizona in fourteen days without serious mishap. They used two 16 foot boats with three airtight compartments and planned to finish the Grand Canyon segment next year at Lees Ferry. They became the tenth expedition into The Box Labyrinth Canyon area and completed the early leg ahead of schedule amid waves of 15 to 30 feet and clay dangers.

George S Bowers longtime editor of the Uintah Basin Record died in Salt Lake City after a three year illness. Born in Timber Ridge Tennessee he moved to Utah and built a family ranch in Duchesne before entering journalism. He launched the Duchesne Courier later adopting the Uintah Basin Record name and steered the paper through years of poor health and tough times.

State Road Plans 775000 for Uintah Basin US 40 realignment

State officials met in Vernal and Fort Duchesne to approve about 775000 dollars to realign and improve a seven mile segment of US 40 through Twist Canyon west of Vernal. A preliminary survey will start immediately with winter work as an unemployment relief measure and oiling of the Myton to Duchesne stretch prioritized.

Uintah county has 1989 wheat farmers cultivating 2936 acres with an average 256 bushels per acre. Under a government cooperation plan, each farmer may get 28 or 30 cents per bushel on 4 percent of their average three year yield for 1933 34 35, with total basin disbursement around 280000 if they cooperate.

Gusher Station Owner Fires On Gas Thieves Near Roosevelt

James Eskelson at Gusher service station fired at two gasoline thieves from his Ford sedan as they fled east toward Roosevelt. A second car likely picked them up after shots shattered the car and punctured a tire. a gun barrel and abandoned wago were found later on a side road. Sheriff Emery Johnson investigated but found no trace of the bandits.
