UBIC Fort Duchesne Builds Legacy With Record Attendance

The 13th Uintah Basin Industrial Convention drew about 20 000 visitors over August 8 and 9 at Fort Duchesne. Attendees praised educational features from Utah State Agricultural College and BYU, the Indian pageant, and the broad exhibits including the Dinosaur National Monument display. Governor Blood spoke on water rights and the Colorado River compact, while Clyde Edmonds highlighted Utah’s poultry industry growth and future prospects for the Uintah Basin.

Dwayne Palmer Funeral Held at Maeser Sunday

Funeral services were held Sunday at Maeser chapel for Dwayne Alton Palmer six who was killed in an accident Thursday afternoon at a farm near Maeser. The service included hymns led by the Maeser bishopric and remembrances by family and friends. Interment followed at Maeser cemetery as mourners recalled the boy’s bright promise and playful nature.

Uintah State Bank Buys City Bonds

At a special Ver nal city council meeting called by Mayor R C Cooper bids on the 32000 waterworks bond issue of 71931 were accepted. Uintah State Bank purchased the bonds for 4081925, a premium of 281925, bearing 1 2 percent interest, due over 13 years. Previously 35000 of this issue was financed through the RFC and 6009 held by Vernal City. The premium was placed in Vernal City’s interest fund. Also 4000 of 12000 bonds due 1937 were bought. Council expects Vernal City can handle the remaining 8900 without refinancing.

Mr and Mrs Floyd Fletcher of Helper are in Vernal for a short visit with friends and relatives. Mr Fletcher has been an instructor in Trask at the junior high school there for several years.

State Issues Placer Leases For River Gold

The state's grant of three placer mining leases along the Green River in Uintah county may launch a major eastern Utah gold development backed by a Pacific coast firm. The venture plans to use a new flotation process to extract flour gold from river sands and expects to mine large tonnages, with operations required by November 1, 1936. Leaseholders include R G Wiedemeier of San Francisco, FR Hanna of San Francisco, and A H Dakin of Vernal, who paid nearly $3,000 in advance royalties and 50 cents per acre yearly.

The Utah District BSA Timpanogos council schedules a central court of honor preview with the monthly meeting on the third Monday. It targets Scouts applying for badge awards and rank advancements to Star Life and Eagle. Vernal Lions Luncheon Hosts Governor Blood at Fort Duchesne

The Vernal Lions Club sponsored a UBIC luncheon at Fort Duchesne with Governor Henry H. Blood and state and federal officials among the guests. Over 150 were served as talks focused on completing US 40 through the Uintah Basin, with promises of near-term work on Vernal to Myton and Duchesne-Fruitland roads and plans to re-gravel in anticipation of oiling next year.

Vernal Lions Club Backs Park Plan For Dinosaur National Monument

At a Saturday meeting of Vernal Lions officers and committeemen with HT Langley of the National Park Service the club pledged support to obtain aid from the PWA and other federal sources to begin work at Dinosaur National Monument The plan includes a museum custodians headquarters ranger station and other buildings and letters were sent to D H Madsen supervisor of wildlife in national parks confirming their backing The immediate construction would push ahead development of the famous site and its facilities.

Funeral Services Held For Eliza Ann Gardiner At Naples

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 o clock in the Naples ward chapel for Mrs Eliza Ann Gardiner. Bishop Byron Goodrich conducted with a large floral tribute. A mixed quartet performed and numerous relatives attended as the casket was laid to rest at Vernal cemetery.

Gun Club Victors in Le Rée Games of Pall

The Vernal Gur Club softball team won three games early in the week defeating Calder Bros Ashton Bros and the Rusty Twelve. A sizable crowd witnessed the afternoon games as league teams from the valley gathered. Alton Hatch of JcPenney served as chairman of the new movement.

Uintah Basin Rodeo set for Vernal September dates

September 12 13 and 14 will host the annual Uintah Basin Rodeo in Vernal Utah with improved prize money and new event features. Rise of Rock Springs will bring over a hundred bucking horses and cowboys from across the region plus race horses. A Rodeo Association of America representative is expected and a street parade will showcase cowboys Indians horses and a band. Improvements at the Fair Grounds include fences corrals grandstand and chutes with events paying from 10 to 450 dollars and a range of steer riding roping and horse races. Lee Kay visits Jensen for Stewart lakes nesting project

Lee Kay of Utahs state fish and game education department led a Feb trip to Jensen to inspect Stewart lakes slated as nesting and hunting grounds for migratory fowl. The group included Floyd Noel and County Attorney Hugh W Colton, Sheriff J Emery Johnson, and J LeRoy Kay. films captured the double control box on Ashley Creek and spillway to Green River while a general view documented the project prospects.

Vernal Troops Dominate UBIC Honors and Local Contests

Vernal's Second Ward Troop 232 claimed UBIC honors and the UBIC Trophy for 1935 while First Ward Troop 233 finished a close second. Ruth Winder of Uintah High won the oratorical contest on conserving water against Roosevelt high. Notable events included lively tennis doubles and a Horseshoe contest, plus two babies named as the basin’s whitest and Indian infants.

National Jamboree Called Off by Epidemic Alarm

President Roosevelt canceled the National Jamboree of Bay Scouts near Washington D C due to an outbreak of infantile paralysis in the area. From Uintah district three Scouts were expected to make the trip with Richard Jensen also planned to go.

Vernal Firemen Attend Utah Convention in Heber

Vernal City Volunteer Fire Department led by Chief Henry B Millecam joined Ace York Jessa York Wendell Pope and wives at a three day Utah State Firemen convention in Heber City last week. John Milburn attended the final day as Vernal Lions dress parade drew applause for vests and helmets depicting the Dinosaur. The Vernal fire department, youngest in the state, will host plans carried over from Ogden next year.
