County to Seek Prisoners for Road Work
The County Board of Commissioners asked Governor Maw to assign 100 prisoners to the Kyler Hollow COC ramp to improve the Vernal Manila highway through Brush Creek Gorge. Prisoners would be housed at the Vernal COC camp this winter, earning 80 cents daily. The plan includes widening the Tayor Mountain road to aid farmers, with work on both roads needed beyond state or forest service capacity after the war. A state road commission representative called prison labor feasible and a Lions Club road committee hearing noted timber and livestock concerns on the Vernal Manila highway and the dugway. The commission will spend 4,000 dollars on maintenance, but no new construction unless War Production Board orders.
