Uintah Proposes Two State Road Projects to Vernal Area

Uintah County officials urged the state highway department to include two road projects in the 1427 budget one for 10 miles of state road from the Roosevelt connection toward Vernal and another for about six miles from Vernal toward Jensen. They believed county taxes could match federal aid for the first project and hoped state funds would match federal aid for the second, which would create a Vernal Jensen state one connection.

Lapoint Man Pies While Camping in Mountains

Lapoint correspondent reports a sudden death as August Nyberg died in the mountains after reportedly becoming ill during a camping trip. The man was found at a camp site, transported home Monday morning, and funeral services were held at the Lapoint hall on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00.

Boundary Line Between Uintah Daggett Fixed by State Engineer

State engineer George M. Bacon determined the Daggett Uintah boundary at McKee's Draw following the west line of township 1 north range 23 east and the Ashley Forest line. He urged validating the compromise line by a precise description for public survey and noted the need to align with land survey lines if the eastward extension differs. Bacon, with county officials, toured the basin and reported the landmark is well defined though contested east of Ashley Forest.

Vernal Boy Hurt By Hay Derrick In Colorado

Ronald Campbell of Vernal was brought home from Savery Colorado after being struck on the head and shoulder by a hay stacker on Art Reader’s farm. The Jenkins stacker weighing about 700 pounds swung and knocked him unconscious and left leg crippled, with muscles badly torn. He had hoped to recover his health in Colorado but faces a likely extended convalescence.

Idaho Claims Oldest Editor In Point Of Service

MOSCOW Idaho August North Idaho claims that H H Copeland of Plummer holds the title of the oldest newspaper man in service in the country. At eighty seven he edits the Plummer Times and prints a weekly issue while running a small job printing business. Copeland began in 1861 as a printer's devil in Wisconsin and later owned and edited twenty three papers. He is a lawyer and member of the Montana state bar.

Wisconsin Professor Enjoys Fishing Tap in Uintah Mountains

Professor Rosa of the University of Wisconsin led a 10 day group from Salt Lake City Provo and Vernal on a fishing trip into the Uintah Mountains north of Vernal. The party visited Paradise Park Mosby Mountain and Chepeta Lakes amid abundant catches. Rosa praised autos and forest roads improving access and described Uintah forests as a natural milkery of moisture feeding fertile Uintah Basin.

Uintah County to Start School September Sixth

Uintah County High School opens September 6 with other county schools starting the following week. A Hayden Bennett Randlett Alterra and Wilson delegation sought transportation from Duchesne County High School at Roosevelt and tuition valued at 60 dollars per student. The board will decide at the next meeting. About 62 pupils attend the neighboring school and Uintah County already paid 1900 dollars for an additional instructor. An appropriation of 250 dollars was set for a county nurse with 250 from Duchesne Duchesne County and the Utah Public Health Association plus 500 from Uintah County for the nurse salary. The State Medical Association is expected to supply a school doctor.

County Commissioners Inspect Ouray Valley Road Plan

County commissioners will inspect the Ouray Valley road project at 3 in a Saturday court house meeting. Taxpayers from Ouray Valley pressed for highway aid and the board will decide the season’s road work after a week of investigation. The board also appropriated 16 cents as Uintah Basin Industrial Convention county quota and appointed Lamar Thacker to register of vital statistics.

Forest Service inspection of Ashley National Forest ends in Vernal

C B Morse and A G Nord led a two week south slope inspection of the Ashley Forest with headquarters in Ogden and Vernal. They reported ample mature timber for Uintah Basin residents and predicted future growth through planned second-cut operations over about 40 years. They highlighted fire protection gains, cooperative locals, a near complete road to Paradise Park, and benefits to Whiterocks Irrigation in dam construction.
