Local committee plans three parades for Vernal September 9 10 and 11 to thrill townspeople. Tempting prizes lure cowboys to Inland Utah event with cash awards for bareback bulldogging steer riding and roping plus a car given away. Two car loads of Texas steers imported for extra excitement may cause headaches for riders.
Roosevelt Lions Club heard ex Utah Trade Commission secretary McGibbeny explain acts regulating felt trade and unfair practices under Utah Law with chapters 19 20 and 21. Guests from Roosevelt and Vernal attended the Thursday evening meeting at the Lions Chapter House.
Uintah State Bank begins its twenty eighth year of service in Ashley Valley on Tuesday. The anniversary notes the 27th since organization of the local bank with Roosevelt era closure aside. Founders and original subscribers include Wm H Goart as first president Ed D Samuels as vice president H W Woolley secretary and L W Cirzy s cashier. First directors listed along with a wide roll of contributors. The bank started in the Personette building. Continued on page four.
Oil work on US 40 between Jensen and Vernal is set to begin early next week. A large crew at the gravel plant with three shifts will begin at Jensen and move west, aiming for steady progress and concurrent oiling with gravel operations.
Uintah County commissioners donate 125 dollars to UBIC Indian Fair and 2100 dollars from Duchesne County commissioners to support Basin summer celebration efforts. Frank W. Wright is named recreation chairman. The committee plans a ferris wheel and rides, and will join Utah Trails and Markers to dedicate a monument at Fort Roubidoux. An Indian float will publicize UBIC Indian Fair at Price parade.
Vernal defeated Myton in a Sunday game with strong hitting byTed Johnson and Myron Murdock in early trouble. Hingham led Vernal with four hits including two triples and a double while Frank Wright circled home on a long hit.
Jessa D. McCarrell age 86 died after pneumonia on a Saturday in Vernal Utah. Funeral conducted Tuesday at the Vernal ward chapel with Bishop Calder presiding. Interment in Vernal Memorial Park. McCarrell a longtime Ashley Valley settler born February 7 1849 moved from Hestry Creek to Utah in 1652. He and Amanda Claff wed January 11 1869 and later settled in Old Ashley Town. Survived by his widow 11 children 25 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Uintah county farmers face a very favorable outlook with five premier crops likely to yield average or better profits. Heavy rains and stable irrigation support alfalfa, corn silage, wheat, oats, and barley, marking this as a banner year. Honey production should rise to average levels, aided by a larger bee population. Hog prices reach highs not seen since 1928, with the county's hog population higher than average.
Cherokee Massey long reigned in the local middleweight scene and earned another clean victory. Instead of a ring, the scene was Warren Brown Diamond mountain where Massey, a PVA trapper, encountered a seven foot mountain man in one of his coyote traps during his rounds.
The death of Eldred ML Johnson 29 occurred Sunday morning at 5:00 AM at a Vernal hospital. He was a timekeeper on the Vernal-Jensen construction project and active in local civic groups including the Vernal Junior Chamber of Commerce and Uintah County Democratic Central Committee. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Vernal First Ward Chapel with Bishop Pontha Calder officiating and I O O F members serving as escorts. Burial followed at Rock Point Cemetery with A Hards conducting graveside rites.
Approximately seventy two men operate two seven hour shifts to lay six miles of rock asphalt between Roosevelt and Fort Duchesne. Four hundred tons of asphalt daily from the Vernal plant are moved to the road as crews progress about half a mile per day. Traffic can be allowed again once the asphalt is laid. Forty four of the seventy men staff the twenty two trucks while the remainder work under Dr. P. Maner at the asphalt plant near Maeser and the road site.
Large throng honors Juliana Hatch wife of Frank Hatch Vernal city waterworks superintendent at funeral in Vernal First Ward chapel. Services led by Bishop Pantha Calder with mixed choir and solos. Interment in Vernal Memorial Park by Swann Funeral Home. Many relatives and outsiders attended from surrounding towns and states.
Dorothy Barnes Fischer 18 daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter G Hames died Tuesday evening in Pasadena hospital. She married Clarence Frocher June 19 at San Bernardino after graduating high school. The Hames family left Vernal in 1928.
Uintah County officials vote to have the county attorney obtain from the Uintah County School Board a detailed report on district indebtedness and expenditures. The inquiry covers bonded debt totals, due dates, interest, sinking funds for five years, and whether funds were borrowed from sinking for operating schools.
Vernal advances its city road program with five First South blocks surfaced and two smaller projects near completion. About fifty workers operate in two shifts, asphalt hauled from the First North First West mixing plant, with half the amount on hand used for the current project.
State Fish and Game Commissioner Newell GB approves a plan to create ten to twenty fish rearing ponds at the mouth of Brush Creek Gorge. Floyd GC Noel, deputy warden, to select the site and oversee construction as hatchlings migrate from state hatcheries. Vernal Gun Club led by Hugh W Colton arranging lease or purchase of land for the project.
