Teenage Brawl Prevented After Saturday's Game

Local men intervened Saturday night to prevent a potential teenage brawl after a high school game. Eyewitnesses described cars full of youths and a tense crowd near the ball park. two youths fought briefly before dispersal. Police were alerted but the participants had already left.

Bill Weeks Jail Sentence for Bootleg Charge

William Weeks owner of Bill's Cafe east of Vernal pleaded guilty in Justice Court to bootlegging. He was fined 100 dollars and sentenced to 30 days in the county jail after a complaint by C F Preshaw of the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Division alleging sale of alcohol at Bills Cafe Saturday.

Roosevelt Youth Driver Crashes Car Near Vernal

A Roosevelt youth, 19, in a 1952 Packard, fell asleep at the wheel in a 50 mile per hour zone Saturday at 2 30 a m and wrecked near Vernal on a canal bridge. He received a reckless driving citation. The car traveled 900 feet out of control, went off the roadway, over an embankment and into a hillside. Car damage about 1500 dollars, guard rail damage about 20 dollars.

Watkins Proposes California Charge for Utah Water

Senator Watkins floated a counter measure to fund Southern California by charging California for using Utah water, aiming to delay passage of the Upper Colorado River Storage bill. He plans a two bill package to exclude California from Hoover Dam power revenue funds and would amend the Boulder Canyon Project Adjustment Act of 1940 to authorize the investigation and related funding.

Heavy Truck and Auto Collide Near Vernal on Highway 40

A 1940 Nash sedan driven by Duane Call failed to stop at a county road stop sign and was struck by a loaded 950 Interaption truck driven by Grant Southam near Vernal on Highway 40. Southam swerved to avoid the car, hit a telephone pole, and damaged the truck front end. Mrs. Call was hospitalized after delivering a baby boy. both mother and child were reported in good condition. The car suffered major door and side damage. truck damage estimated at $500. Call cited for failing to stop.

Timber Roads Hearing Planned For August 18

Interested persons may express views on two proposed timber access roads at a public advisory hearing Thursday August 18 at 10 am in the Forest Supervisor's Vernal office. Vernal Planning Meet Discusses Proposed Master Plan

Pease Brothers of Vernal reports a public meeting set for Monday at 8 p m in the City Office to discuss a proposed master plan for Vernal and surrounding areas. Wiley Baucum, planning board chairman, notes the plan aims to guide future development and secure a good street system to avoid costly relocations. Dale Despain, city planner, is assisting as a tentative plan covers from one mile south of city limits to Reader corner, Naples Road to west of Fifth West, urging all property owners to attend.

At a regular meeting of Vernal City Council the property tax levy for the coming year was set at 19 mils, unchanged from last year. The breakdown includes general and public safety 5.75, park and public property 1.75, traffic lights 2.0, bond and interest 9.50, streets 4.0, and special improvements 1.0. Water meters were tabled for water committee review.Edward A. Clyde was named attorney in fact on water filings and to review filings. Jack Boron will replace Hugo Mullinger on the police force. The gas system installation is expected to be completed by July 1, 1956.

July tourism at the National Monument rose 18 percent from July 1954 with 21,460 visitors. Through July 1955 the year’s total reached 38,755, a 10 percent increase, despite 120 degree heat in the Headquarter area as geologists study two Corynosaurus or similar specimens and observe quarry reefing operations.

Vernal Woman Fined for Drunken Driving

Vernal resident Mrs. Velma B. Beavers was fined 100.00 and sentenced to 60 days in jail for drunken driving in Justice Court. Thirty days of the sentence were suspended on payment of the fine. Beavers, arrested at Jensen by the sheriff's office, has a prior drunken driving arrest from a year and a half ago.

Racing Meet Delights Vernal Fans With Fast Horseracing

Over 1000 enthusiasts crowded Vernal for a weekend horserace meet as thoroughbreds thundered around the track and dust rose. Hugh W. Colton announced the races while Woodey Searle and Aar lon Wilkins called calf roping events. Glendon Rhoades rode and fans rose to their feet. Sertaet Already plans for next year's meet underway.

Sinclair Station Leased to Clell R. Miller

The Sinclair service station at 609 West Main was leased Monday to Clell R. Miller of Berea. The completed building features modern machinery for quick regular service work. Miller, a former American Gilsonite Company mechanic at Bonanza, plans to run the station with his wife Doris and children Sharon 16, cer, 12, Lynn 10, and Keith. The Miller family has lived in Gines for three years after moving from Bonanza.

Dry Fork Blacktopping Extends One Mile in Naples

The Dry Fork road gains a one mile pavement extension near Naples as county crews finish laying asphalt from Asphalt Till to the Dry Fork route. Phillip Smith of Vernal suffers a severe cut while clearing timber for the pipeline project. he is hospitalized in satisfactory condition with stitches.
